I know some people just want to cast the United States as ontologically, irreparably evil, but there's something to the idea of framing political movements through the lens of "we're just trying to live up to our stated ideals" *That* resonates with people broadly

Anna Christie (1930)
A 3-star review of Anna Christie (1930)

Another slow-paced relationship drama adapted from a popular play. There are a ton of these in this era of film and I'm cluing into the recurring tropes. Anna Christie is on the better end of these films, the dialogue is flowery in a way that lends itself to live stage acting, though the cast here does a great job of making it flow appropriately. While the roles have almost no physicality whatsoever, the acting is energetic enough to compensate, with Marthy Owens (Marie Dressler) a highlight of the auxiliary cast.

Chris Christofferson (George F. Marion) is a salty sailor, who left his daughter Anna (Greta Garbo) with family inland 15 years ago in hopes it would be a more stable life than seafaring could provide. After losing her job and a stint in the hospital, Anna's coming to stay and rest back to health. While on the barge together, Anna & Chris rescue Matt Burke (Charles Bickford), another sailor shipwrecked in a storm. He and Anna fall in love. But OH NO Anna has a DARK SECRET: She used to be a prostitute. Will her father and lover abandon her when they learn she is IMPURE????? Nah, it's all resolved with a 5-minute conversation at the very end and they live happily ever after the end.

Disraeli (1929)
A 2 1/2-star review of Disraeli (1929)

When I was a kid, my parents would sometimes watch a serious drama or a political thriller, and I would be So Damn Bored because it's just a bunch of grown-ups standing around and talking for hours. Well, I'm not exactly overjoyed to say that Disraeli brought me right back to my childhood.

This movie is a dramatization of England's 1874-1880 Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli (George Arliss) and his purchase of the Suez Canal by England from Egypt. Along the way, he also helps his protege Lord Deeford (Anthony Bushell) through a troubled romance, and outwits a pair of Tsarist Russian spies in his cabinet.

While George Arliss really does shine and dominates every scene he's in, no other actor in the film comes close to matching him in terms of emotion, energy, or presence onscreen. The plot moves at a snails pace with the only tension coming from "If we don't make this purchase, the Russians will! And then we won't get to rape India anymore!" which is not very compelling if you ask me. The staging is uninteresting, as another example of a stage play put on film with few if any changes for the medium.

My favorite moment comes when, discussing the repercussions of losing colonial power over India says (paraphrase) "Without our power we'll be just like Belgium if it was an island"

Project: Hail Mary (2026)
A 4 1/2-star review of Project Hail Mary (2026)

This is the kind of thing that's so completely up my alley I don't even have much to say about it. Two scientists from different species must work together to solve a problem that threatens both their civilizations. Everything here works great for me, the relationship between Grace (Ryan Gosling) and Rocky (James Ortiz) is the centerpiece and the most rewarding part of the plot.

My only minor nitpicks are A) some of Grace's personal issues are set up, but never resolved in favor of focusing on the external scientific problem, which leaves a few strange notes of "wait, did this guy just regress a little bit?" & B) I like Ryan Gosling, I enjoy his roles, I like his humor. He's too much of a sexy movie star these days for me to really buy him as the weird lame nerd he's trying to be in this film.

King of Jazz (1930)
A 3 1/2-star review of King of Jazz (1930)

King of Jazz is another plotless revue show with a series of musical numbers, dances short comedy sketches, and one real neat cartoon. The performers, led by Paul Whiteman, represent the cream of the crop of the (White, pop-oriented) jazz scene of the time. The music is solid, with appearances from Whiteman's ensemble, a series of guest singers including Bing Crosby, and a lovely arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue which, because of the colorizing process, is really pretty green. While the music is inoffensive, there are spots where the number of musical-theater-style slow pop arias really drags out the runtime. Despite some limitations in palatte, the color is used really well alongside interesting shots and choreo and the art direction (which did win an academy award this year) is maybe the best thing about this as a viewing experience. The comedy sketches are pretty much all terrible, but mercifully short.

If you're a music academic type, this is definitely worth checking out, though die-hard jazzers may be disappointed by the safe-for-grandpa white bread on display here

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
A 4-star review of The Lost World: Jurassic Park

This is a hard one to review honestly, because owning a VHS copy as a child means every line of dialogue in this movie is indelably inked on my psyche. But what do we really have here? Good actors doing the best they can witha real dumb script. Jeff Goldblum & a young Vanessa Chester are the standouts.

This is one of the most jam-packed, convoluted plots I've seen in a minute: a team of scientists goes to the dino island to to naturalist work to help get the island labelled as a nature preserve. BUT after they get there a second, much larger team shows up to do poaching to start a zoo. BUT one of the scientists is a saboteur meant to stop them. BUT the leader of the poachers wants to hunt a t-rex so he kidnaps a baby. BUT the scientists steal the baby and heal it's broken leg. BUT the t-rexes attack them and blow up all their stuff. BUT now they get saved by the poachers and have to work together. BUT after fighting raptors together the poachers betray the scientis and still poach a t-rex. BUT the t-rex gets out and goes Godzilla on San Diego. BUT Jeff Goldblum finds the baby and uses it to lure the t-rex back to the boat.

Jesus theres like 3 movies in there, anyway something something parenthood the end?

(Tbc, I think this is shitty reporting from the outlet, not anything else. I know they don't literally mean Old English, as in the language of the Anglo Saxons, they just mean "old English" as in, presumably, the play's standard text, which is hardly revolutionary, or even noteworthy.)

A Sand County Almanac (Aldo Leopold)
A 5-star review of A Sand County Almanac

Written in the '40s, A Sand County Almanac is author Aldo Leopold's treatise on conservation, nature, and ethical land use. About 2/3 of the book is a series of not-quite-poetry odes to the natural world. First a section dedicated to spending a year, one month at a time, on a farm in the woods of Wisconsin, then a wider-ranging section discussing the ecology of further wildernesses, including Mexico, Canada, & even Iowa! The last 1/3 of the book is a direct discussion of ecological ethics in America, the triumphs and failures of American conservation, and a reevaluation of those ethics for the future.

A beautiful book well worth anyone's time, just about everything Leopold says rings true to today. Sometimes it's hearting to read his fears when they regarded issues that have since been solved, for example the loss of the Yellowstone wolves has been reversed (50 years later) through conservation efforts. Other points, like the anxiety about potential damage wrought by the auto industry, weigh heavy knowing much worse things have gotten since then. It's sometimes frustrating that Leopold acknowledges that Indigenous communities have developed land ethics of the type he advocates for, but basically never examines them at all. This does come across to me as a tactical choice to appeal to '40s White America, and while I understand, with modern eyes it's a palpable omission.

Kinky Boots (2005)
A 4-star review of Kinky Boots (2005)

After the death of his father, Charlie (Joel Edgerton) must put his dreams of working in marketing in London on hold and take over ownership of the family artisan shoe factory. He discovers the factory is soon to go bankrupt, but meets a drag queen named Lola (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and is stuck by an idea: women's high heel boots, built sturdy enough for men.

Listen, is the premise ridiculous? Yes. Is the tackling of gender politics sort of embarrassingly input and of its time? Yes. Is Charlie's workplace relationship with Lauren (Sarah-Jane Potts) totally inappropriate? Yes. Do I care? No. Theres a sense of love and joy that pervades every character, every actor, and every shot that makes me just not care that much about the goofy edges. Maybe for a couple hours we can pretend that transphobia really can be defeated by an arm-wrestling match & event planners would be totally okay with an impromptu drag show in the middle of a runway event.

Sally (1929)
A 2-star review of Sally (1929)

In this adaptation of the at-the-time extremely popular Broadway musical, a waitress and aspiring performer Sally (Marilyn Miller) is hoping for her big break. Alongside her is her best friend and coworker Grand Duke Constintine (Joe E. Brown), an exiled noble of "Czechoslovenia" living a double life between high society appearances and working as a waiter to make ends meet. She's also joined by Blair Farrell (Alexander Gray), a creep who stalks her with whom she falls in love.

Ugh, it's 1929, we just figured out how to put sound (and color!) in these movies, so I guess we have to do musicals now. The only problem is nobody's figured out how to pace them, or write them about anything other than the music business. The result is a plodding nothing of a plot where Sally wants to become a famous performer and does, Blair's engaged to someone else (arranged) but he wants Sally and eh no worries it gets dropped and they get married, and Constintine does some comedy relief antics that would be at home in a Disney-channel sitcom B-plot. There's only like four (4) songs, two of which repeat multiple times and only one of them is memorable. The costuming and choreo are at least nice.

A 4 1/2-star review of Coyote vs ACME (2026)

What if My Cousin Vinny had a baby with Rodger Rabbit? After decades of faulty products, Wile E. Coyote gets the idea to sue ACME Corporation for all they're worth. This works on every level, it's hilarious, dramatic, and surprisingly thoughtful. All the human actors (Will Forte, Lana Condor, John Cena) are clearly super excited to be here and deliver fantastic performances that slot alongside the Looney Tunes cast with ease.

Absolutely worth your time.
