Currently UK based. Interested in all the usual vanilla stuff (books, history, board games, politics, the Beatles, 🇪🇺). Mainly here to look at cool cathedral photos, but perpetually get sidetracked. Bonjedward.

A symbol of hope after suffering in war, as well as being a regular venue for productions of the famous medieval Coventry Mystery Plays, the ruins of Coventry Cathedral are under threat and are the subject of a new conservation campaign.

I remember when the first Resident Evil movie came out and a friend who eventually went mad and wrote “Fuck Bush” 10,000 times on his walls with a sharpie, saw the poster and said “Huh, add a “P” to that and ain’t that the truth?” And his girlfriend went “Resident Pevil?” I nearly died laughing

Suggested ground rules for the ‘debate’ on 'bad' cycling 🧵: 1) Cyclists or cycling advocates are not collectively responsible for the bad behaviour of individuals. What’s your actual point? You want less cycling or rules that have that effect? Be clear.

And why wouldn't you? Cycling, whether on a regular bike or on a cargo, is such a brilliant way to get to school. And to know that as they get older they can do so independently is the dream.

For decades, we’ve been told growing cities require more traffic, noise and asphalt. But places like Delft prove that we can move more with less, while gaining beauty, safety, sociability and flexibility. That’s what curbing traffic looks like: not the absence of movement, but the abundance of life.
In this single frame of Delft, a young couple cycles effortlessly on a canal-side path. A tram glides by in the background. Flowers spill into the foreground. Church spires punctuate the skyline. No single mode dominates the scene; each has been given its own space to thrive.

A suggested statement for Andy Burnham.
‘The British public decided in the 1930s that they would not tolerate black-shirted militias marching through their streets. They would cherish robust political argument; they would not accept thuggery and intimidation. When Oswald Mosley led his Blackshirts to Cable Street, local people turned them back. A new law – introduced by a Liberal, backed by Labour and carried by a Conservative majority – banned private militias, political uniforms and ‘the use or display of physical force in promoting any political object’. The British people are as determined today as in the 1930s that they will not accept the methods of Mussolini and the Munich Beer Hall. This government will uphold the law and defend the traditions of British democracy’.

Why the f**k do we not classify the social media companies as “publishers”? They would then be subject to the existing law that makes a publisher responsible for what it publishes. It should not make any difference that what the social media companies publish is digital rather than ink on paper

We have to classify, X, Facebook & the other tech platforms as ”publishers“, legally responsible for everything that appears. It’s unnaceptable that they hide behind their users & use the “nothing to do with me, guv” defence. They make untold billions. It’s up to THEM not us to police their sites

HG Wells is alleged to have remarked "Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race”. You could see this shocking chart as an index of civilisation. A country which gets this issue so badly wrong is likely to fail in many other ways.

Not to be some wild-eyed innocent, but I think it should be slightly bigger news that The Lancet have crunched the numbers and found that Musk's USAID cuts will kill 14 million people. And that's just by 2030. That's 9,600 people a day, every day, until the next world cup rolls around.
