There is almost a 1:1 overlap between Tories who say "We need to get more people with operational private sector experience in Westminster" and the ones who have reduced the chance of "Ops Director at a decent sized company" wanting to be a Tory MP to approximately zero.

Green party of England and Wales facing ostracism over ‘Zionism is racism’ vote
European Green party says motion goes against its policy, with German Green co-leader calling it ‘intolerable and unacceptable’ * Zack Polanski may rue lack of leadership when Greens needed him to act The English and Welsh Greens are facing international ostracism after adopting a policy declaring Zionism as a form of racism, which has drawn dismay from the group representing European Greens. The co-leader of the German Greens separately said the policy was “intolerable and unacceptable”, running contrary to its belief in the right of Israel to exist. Continue reading...

Think this is an interesting thing if you want a *serious* discussion about regulation. Regulation can be used as an excuse when you can't be bothered with something. Separately, I think a lot of regulation doesn't take into account the impact of "How our insurers will tell us to deal with this."

Andrew Griffith delivers one of the all time rhetorical stinkers. My Tory conference SKETCH. thecritic.co.uk/an-h...
On reflection, it would have been better for Andrew Griffith if he’d abandoned his speech when the announcer got his name wrong. He is the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, supposedly the second most important figure in the Conservative Party. If they don’t even know what he’s called, he should take the hint.

It was an oration that party managers will describe as a cautionary tale to generations of MPs yet unborn

He didn’t, of course. Perhaps he thought that after such a slip, things could only get better. If so, it was a judgement in which he was profoundly mistaken. He was about to give one of the all-time terrible party conference speeches. It was an oration that party managers will describe as a cautionary tale to generations of MPs yet unborn. Some speeches are written terribly. Some are delivered terribly. This one was so terrible in every way that it should be sealed in lead and buried at the bottom of the ocean.

The rate of price rises is starting to increase again, driven by the rising cost of energy. This is coming at a time when families are already struggling with the high cost of essentials from earlier periods of inflation.
Line chart showing UK change in CPI price levels by spending category from Jul 2021 to Jul 2026: electricity, gas and other fuels spike above 100% then fall; food rises steadily toward ~40%; petrol is volatile; overall CPI and average weekly earnings climb gradually.
