another researcher accuses OpenAI of training on conversations and then claiming a breakthrough
Valerio Capraro @ValerioCapraro

BREAKING: OpenAl might have stolen another major proot.
In a detailed Mastodon post, which I report in full in the comments, Andreas Thom presents several pieces of evidence suggesting that OpenAl may have trained Astra on conversations in which he and Gábor Kun were working on Gromov's soficity conjecture, one of the ten problems OpenAl later announced Astra had solved.
I know Andreas. We met several times early in our careers. He is an exceptional mathematician, a leading expert on sofic and hyperlinear groups, and one of the most respected scholars in the field. He has spent two decades working on this problem.
If his account is correct, this is not a minor dispute over attribution. It would mean that unpublished human work was absorbed into a model and then presented to the world as a breakthrough by the model itself. And if the allegations raised by Levent Alpöge, Tristan Buckmaster, and now Andreas Thom are all substantiated, we are no longer looking at isolated incidents.
We may be looking at one of the greatest intellectual scandals in the history of science.
Al is not discovering new mathematics.
Al is stealing human discovery.

Bluesky’s statement deriding Threads users as “guinea pigs” is not representative of Blacksky Algorithms, the atproto ecosystem or the open social web more broadly. Communities form around communication networks. And communities should never be trolled for whatever tool helps them find each other.

We also have the potential to help put things right, as many people are through nature conservation, rewilding, or other positive inputs. As a species, we have immense capacity for radical, rapid change. Let's never forget that.

Watching people spend millions of dollars on more accurate psychiatric diagnosis w/ AI when making sure people have food, shelter, safety, and meds if they want them is the real answer It’s painful to watch suicide prevention reduced to math We need to be better at improving QOL, not at taxonomy

Screenshots from Miss Congeniality. Subtitles read "Describe your perfect date.

That's a tough one. I'd have to say April 25th. Because it's not too hot and not too cold. All you need is a light jacket."

The only good thing about Palantir is that they are too arrogant to hide what they are. They are insecure technofascists who want to control the world through surveillance and AI, and they are ready to harm anyone who stands in their way. Europeans cannot trust Palantir

The implicit media consensus is that urban voters should not be able to overrule rural voters, but that rural voters should be able to overrule urban voters, an assumption so axiomatic and unquestionable that nobody even understands they're making it.

A jury has ruled that Live Nation-Ticketmaster is an illegal monopoly. A judge will determine whether or not to break the company up, in addition to other damages. This is a big deal. Remember that the Trump admin tried to settle the lawsuit with a slap on the wrist — but state AGs said no way.

To echo the sentiments of G.K. Chesterton, fairy tales do not tell children that monsters exist — because they know that already. But rather more importantly, fairy tales tell them (and us) that the monster can be killed. And such stories must never ever go out of fashion.
