Literal decades of damage to United States national security. There are kids now who would have gone to do ROTC or joined the IC. They won't be there in thirty years as senior officers or analysts. Think about what leadership looks like then if only populated by those who joined now...

The problem is that "while you weren't looking the tech industry was comprehensively taken over by a cult based around a piece of Harry Potter fanfic" is self-evidently an absolutely ridiculous claim that can't possibly have happened, which is a real problem given that it 100% did happen.

This is kinda why ACE (and predecessor dispersal concepts) existed tbh. It would be kind of sick if we could have a USAF cheap terminal interceptor for defending dispersed sites, like Ameri-SA-27 on a truck.

as someone who has read far too much military history i think this is as wrong as can be. america did not send warriors to win world war two. we sent shopkeepers, and farmers, and accountants, and millions of ordinary people who did not dream of glory and death. and we won.

You could argue that the majority of America's wars have been won by very boring people applying civilian skills to the mass logistics of armed conflict.

Peer warfare is the art of creating logistics supply lines to where you want to be, and blowing up whatever would impede that. (This is a riff on someone else, @sodrock.bsky.social I think)

U.S. policy had non-proliferation as somewhere between a top policy priority and The Top policy priority since World War II for a goddamn reason, and the end of the Cold War only *elevated* its relative importance.

reading various accounts of AI psychosis and a) the people behind chatgpt 4 should be sued into oblivion, especially for reintroducing it, and b) even for less vulnerable people and non-sycophantic AI there is an enormous danger in AI presenting itself as a frictionless friend.

great essay. in particular struck by this concluding point, which i think gets at both how effective communication and trust from elites to the masses has broken down, and not least because elite consensus has itself broken down

Going to push back hard that kit and tactics are utterly meaningless. All the subfields of military art are interrelated, mutually interdependent, and critical to success. Operational or strategic acumen cannot redeem tactical failure, nor can tactical success redeem strategic incoherence.
