I don't think this article is wrong exactly, but it mistakes largely iterative technological changes for a lack of political will in prosecuting conflicts. Raiding isn't a product of economic shifts in coercion, so much as a lack of willingness to accept the political costs of military casualties.

This is just a non-sequitur. Our bases were built to do various things at various times. I don’t think any were built under the assumption that “air superiority would keep them safe.” Moreover, we do have air superiority over Iran et al. We just don’t have impenetrable air defenses.

This problem is both not unique to the Navy and also overstated to a degree. The Air Guard / Air Force Reserves are picking up a lot of these pilots, along with their active duty Air Force compatriots. The solution is to provide easier total force integration between the reserves / active duty.

Trump was surprised when Driscoll told him how many generals and other top officers had been fired, pushed out, or passed over for promotion under Hegseth, one of the people said. Driscoll argued that the Army could not transform itself the way it needs to, because of the departure of so many leaders, this person said, adding that Trump expressed concern about the deep cuts to the Army's senior leadership. Driscoll informed the president of his intention to resign—and by today, Driscoll was on his way out.

It’s a sad indictment of the media that a billionaire can compare a 5% wealth tax to the Soviet Union in an interview with the NYT and the NYT journalist does not laugh in their face and write it up as an insight into the mind of somebody who has lost touch with reality
