To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

One of America’s Last Chestnut Groves Is About to Be Destroyed for a Data Center
A rare 200-tree American chestnut grove in West Virginia may be cleared for data-center development, but the project denies the site is on its land.

I've played poker at dozens of casinos in my life, from the fanciest palaces in Las Vegas to crappy riverboats in the Midwest, and I can say that the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City was -- by a fucking mile -- the dirtiest, dingiest, cruddiest casino I have ever experienced in my life.

The National Hurricane Center on Wednesday morning extended the forecast cone of an ongoing tropical cyclone — Hurricane Rachel — into California. The storm won’t be a hurricane by the time it nears CA this weekend, but it could still present hazards characteristic of a tropical cyclone.

The National Hurricane Center just drew a forecast path for Rachel into California. Is the threat legit?
Strong winds, large waves and storm surge are possible in Orange and San Diego counties, with heavy rain and flash flooding possible in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Las Vegas and Phoenix.

There is a reason that AI is so attractive to fascists. It allows its users (adherents might be a better word) to hand over their decision-making, their thinking, their autonomy, to something they can convince themselves is bigger, stronger, and smarter than them.

This analysis of the far right in Brasil is spot on - and to me it also describes the politics of ressentiment in the UK and the US as well. It is just that in these two countries, it is targeted at migrants. www.equator.org/articles/bra...
Ever since Brexit and Trump, when the political weather changed so dramatically, the left has responded with two narratives: we either paint the far right as a revolt of the elites without a real popular base, or as a revolt of the left-behind, of a working-class betrayed by liberal elitism.

Neither of these narratives persuades me. Rather, I believe the contemporary far right is a cross-class phenomenon. One way to understand it is as a movement that brings together an underclass that has given up waiting on the promises of modernisation – formal work, accountable institutions, real equality before the law – and an elite who no longer even pretends those promises are on offer.

Between them lies the hardest core of true believers – not the largest group statistically, but the most passionate – which I call, borrowing a phrase from Orwell, the “lower-upper-middle class”. These are people who fall between two stools: they have a good standard of living but lack the assets or social capital of the true elite. They are not only haunted by the fear of downward social mobility, but also threatened by any minor upward mobility achieved by those below them, as during the Pink Tide in Latin America, when the poor became less poor – began attending university, travelling internationally and so forth. This generated a feeling of resentment that was easily instrumentalised.

Above all, an NDA is a contract - a CIVIL document unrelated to criminal law. Violating a private NDA cannot expose you to criminal prosecution or any kind of punishment. Often, NDAs are used by the rich/powerful to intimidate or frighten poor or unsophisticated parties. Enforcing an NDA is hard.
