My joint statement with @tiffanycaban.bsky.social calling on @nycparks.bsky.social to pause the RFP process for the proposed tennis bubble in Astoria Park:
As elected officials representing Astoria Park, we have closely followed the Parks Department’s Request for Proposals (RFP)
for a new indoor “tennis bubble.”

This proposed bubble would cover at least 8 of Astoria Parks’s 14 tennis courts for half of each year during the indoor season. The Parks Department is seeking a for- or non-profit concessionaire to construct and operate the bubble and a clubhouse for the next 20 years. The concessionaire would also be responsible for the resurfacing and lighting of all 14 tennis courts, along with other capital improvements. We have heard from hundreds of constituents concerned about this proposal and the potential for expensive hourly rates, limited court accessibility, insufficient free court hours, and more.

Many residents are rightfully skeptical of the licensing of public parkland to a private entity, with no guarantee that proceeds will be invested back into our parks, at a moment when the Parks Department should be receiving adequate funding and completing projects like this themselves. We share their belief that green space should be as open and
accessible to the public as possible. We have held and attended numerous meetings with the Parks Department and our constituents about this proposal.

Last month, we submitted a request for the Parks Department to, for the first time, meet directly with a group of concerned constituents, and they agreed. We are currently waiting to hear back from the Parks Department to schedule a meeting in November.

In the meantime, we are calling on the Parks Department to pause the RFP process for the proposed tennis bubble. As demonstrated by the overwhelming opposition from our constituents, additional community outreach by the Parks Department is necessary before any changes to our tennis courts can move forward. Awarding a contract at this time would erode public trust in local government to be responsive to their concerns.

We are committed to working with the Parks Department and our constituents to protect our public parkland and ensure generations to come can enjoy Astoria Park and its tennis courts.

It's Knife Ghost season.
A pumpkin patch. In the distance, a faint image of a blue ghost surrounded by a halo of carving knives. The text reads: you're carving. The knife ghost waits. Because you're using a knife. Instead of a pumpkin carving kit. Always use a pumpkin carving kit, never a knife.

PMC COVlD Update, Oct 5, 2026 ◾️Levels peaked at ≈610,000 estimated new daily infections in mid Sep ◾️36 states still with known outbreaks (see Alt text) ◾️13th COVlD wave Website: pmc19.com Interactive county-level map: pmc19.com/map
The US has at least 36 states and territories with COVlD outbreaks. The apparent wave peak has passed, but transmission remains high across much of the country. States with observed outbreaks include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawai'i, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. There are likely outbreaks in additional states. The summary statistic only includes counties with observed data, rather than estimated data. For example, Arkansas, DC, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Wisconsin likely have outbreaks, but monitoring is poor.

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

Renee Good's family filed two lawsuits today. The first, against, USG, is a standard wrongful death. The second is a Klan Act lawsuit against Jonathan Ross, AND STEPHEN MILLER and Greg Bovino. It names Nick Shirley and Christopher Rufo as non-party co-conspirators for their racist propaganda.
44. At all relevant times, Defendants Ross, Miller, Noem, Lyons, Homan,
Bovino, and the John Doe Federal Agents acted under color of federal law and within the
scope of a joint enterprise with the private actors described below. Defendant
Lewandowski acted in part under color of federal law and in part, as alleged below, as a
private person, his federal status having been limited to a temporary part-time designation
that his conduct exceeded. Shirley, Rufo, and Ben Bergquam, and the other non-party
private actors described below, agreed to and in fact participated in the conspiracy alleged
here: each acted in concert with, and with the knowledge and encouragement of, federal
officials.
