This confirms what we’ve known all along: Amazon has spent $5 million to astroturf opposition to my bill so that they can keep exploiting workers, put New Yorkers in danger, and get Jeff Bezos another mega yacht. All while pretending they’re not Amazon, but a group of small businesses.

My remarks on the budget:

Tiffany Cabán @tiffanycaban.bsky.social · 30/06/2026
NO NEW COPS
“I am proud to have worked closely with the Mayor and public safety advocates to ensure there was no increase to the NYPD’s headcount in this budget. Every dollar we spend on policing and incarceration means money we can’t spend on housing, mental health care, substance use treatment, and economic stability: the proven policies that actually keep our communities healthy and safe. This budget is an important check on the failed policy of broken windows policing and will allow us to build a public safety infrastructure rooted in care, not punishment and incarceration. And we will keep building on it.”

My statement on today’s Supreme Court decision allowing the Trump administration to revoke Temporary Protected Status for over one million immigrant neighbors.
“Today’s Supreme Court decision is cruel and unjust, putting in danger the lives of migrants who fled violence, persecution, and disease. As a lawyer, I know the law is a tool and right now it’s being wielded by racist, xenophobic bigots. The law is not justice, not safety, not ethics. It is not immutable. We must fight back to protect our immigrant neighbors.”

With news that a veto override attempt on Introduction 175-B has been delayed, Caucus leaders Sandy Nurse, Tiffany Cabán, Alexa Avilés, and Kayla Santosuosso issue the following statement:

“We’re relieved that Introduction 175-B is behind us. We have long advocated for measures to combat hate, such as @jfrejnyc NYC Against Hate, which we were thrilled to see in the Mayor’s Executive Budget. We know that proactive and data-driven measures are the only way to effectively combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, transphobia, and all other forms of hate violence.

Since 175-B’s introduction, we have seen collective opposition from civil rights organizations, religious leaders, unions, and educational organizations warning about the serious risks of infringement on Americans’ constitutional right to peacefully assemble. It would have been irresponsible for this bill to become law, especially as we witness a crackdown on campuses. Students and faculty are facing widespread terminations and deportations, all as a consequence of exercising the right to organize against genocide.

Our city can protect students’ right to make their voices heard while also making clear that hate violence has no place here. We remain committed to combating hate violence in NYC and centering the needs of vulnerable New Yorkers in the term ahead.”With news that a veto override attempt on Introduction 175-B has been delayed, Caucus leaders Sandy Nurse, Tiffany Cabán, Alexa Avilés, and Kayla Santosuosso issue the following statement:

Caucus leaders Sandy Nurse, Tiffany Cabán, Alexa Avilés, and Kayla Santosuosso issue the following statement in regard to the release of Mayor Mamdani’s FY27 Executive Budget:

“We’re grateful to see the Mayor’s Executive Budget appears to maintain many of the crucial services that New Yorkers rely on every day. Among the many announcements, we appreciate the inclusion of an additional $26 million for the Office to Combat Hate, $20.5 million to implement the Street Vendor Reform Package, the baselining of $25 million for Promise NYC, and cuts to both wasteful vacancies at the Department of Corrections and bloated contracts.

For years, our members have stood determined to ensure that working New Yorkers do not bear the brunt of any budget deficit and we will continue to hold firm on this core belief. Negotiations aren’t over yet. There’s much more to be done to bolster CityFHEPS, NYCHA Vacant Unit Readiness, and other vital services. Response to the City Council’s Preliminary Budget by City Socialists in Office with @cmalexaaviles.bsky.social, @chiosse.bsky.social, and @cmshahanahanif.bsky.social
Graphic with Council Member logos and title: Response to the City Council’s Preliminary Budget by the City Socialists in Office, Council Members Tiffany Cabán, Chi Ossé, Alexa Avilés, and Shahana HanifTo bring our vision for a just New York for all to fruition, the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations must pay what they owe. We continue to demand that the Governor listen to New Yorkers and Tax the Rich.

Our goal is to achieve a budget that supports working-class New Yorkers and does not cut the services they rely on. We appreciate that the Council budget seeks creative solutions to closing the budget deficit. We are also encouraged that the Mayor and Speaker are both working towards a balanced budget that maintains essential programs for New Yorkers.

As we enter the next phase of budget negotiations, we look forward to working with the Speaker and Mayor towards a budget that delivers a more affordable, liveable, and safe city for all New Yorkers.

New Yorkers deserve solutions that meaningfully address hate violence — not political theater & half-measures. Instead of voting to pass unserious & anti-democratic “buffer zone” bills, @council.nyc.gov should invest $26-30 million in evidence-based non-carceral hate violence prevention. Read why:

My statement on today's historic announcement by @mayor.nyc.gov on the creation of the Office of Community Safety
“Today’s announcement is a vital step towards making New York City safer by investing in caring, empirically-driven solutions that support strong neighborhoods rather than the failed practice of relying on police to respond to every societal ill. Our communities have long known the true sources of safety -  addressing poverty, mental health, substance use, and getting to the root causes of conflict and violence before they escalate.Renita Francois has been at the forefront of the movement for a holistic approach that drives safety, not mass punishment and incarceration. I'm eager to work with her and the mayor to build out a robust Office of Community Safety that enacts a framework that gives people and our communities access to the safety we all deserve.”

Shame on NYU Langone for bending the knee to the Trump administration and closing the Transgender Youth Health Program 🏳️‍⚧️✊🏽
To the transgender community: our commitment remains firm. We will keep fighting like hell alongside you for your right to healthcare.

To New York’s healthcare providers and government: hold the line. Do not acquiesce to this cruelty. Protect our people and our state.

NYU Langone: shame on you for bending the knee to the Trump Administration and closing the Transgender Youth Health Program. It is a disturbing violation of the Hippocratic Oath (First, Do No Harm) to cancel care that is proven to save lives.

All major medical associations agree: gender affirming care is lifesaving healthcare that improves the physical health, mental health, and wellbeing of transgender youth.

Removing access to gender affirming care leads to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide attempts among transgender youth.

A public servant was detained by ICE. Masked police kidnapping a City Council employee who works every day for New Yorkers doesn’t make us safe. Trump’s deportation agenda was never about safety. It’s about scapegoating immigrants for problems caused by billionaires. Free our neighbors. Abolish ICE.
Tweet by Julie Menin saying:

This afternoon, a City Council employee was detained by federal immigration officials at a routine immigration appointment. He had legal authorization to remain in the country until October of this year.

We are doing everything we can to secure his immediate release, and we demand swift and transparent action by the federal government on this apparent overreach.

Across the nation, we have seen aggressive escalations by ICE that raise serious concerns on the use of excessive force and a lack of accountability.

As New Yorkers, we will stand up for the rights and dignity of every neighbor.
