l love when a white journalist reporting on “concerns of lack of diversity” in DSA fumbles the name of the Latina elected official he interviews for the article. My name is Moreno, not Morales.

Diana Moreno, who earlier this year won the special election for the New York State Assembly seat Mamdani vacated to move to Gracie Mansion, said non-DSA Democrats should pay attention to how the group is whipping up support. Democrats, she argued, are “out of touch and losing primaries, and with a base that’s deeply angry at their inability or unwillingness to fight against the far right.”

To Moreno, democratic socialism “means healthcare, that means housing, that means childcare. That is the responsibility of government to actually guarantee for its citizens because it’s something that we need to live.”

At one of the panels, Morales touted working on a bill she picked up from Mamdani in the New York State Assembly that would strip tax-exempt status from groups that do work deemed detrimental to Palestinians.

At another point, when an Ithaca, New York, council member was recalling being warned about participating in Palestinian solidarity rallies the day after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, an audience member loudly giggled multiple times.

Regarding a candidate who doesn’t describe the war in Gaza as genocide, Morales told CNN, “I don’t know if I would trust their judgment in other issues, because I think to me it’s blatant and clear that what’s happening in Palestine and has been happening for now years is considered a genocide.”

We are state and local elected officials who represent diverse constituencies throughout New York State, and have witnessed the impact that Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s cruel operations have had on immigrant families and our communities.

The recent killings of two innocent immigrant fathers, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero—following the killings of Silverio Villegas González, Nurul Amin Shah Alam, Renée Good, Alex Pretti, and many others by immigration enforcement—show ICE has no regard for public safety, due process, or human decency. Since Trump’s second term began, over fifty people have died in ICE custody, and ICE agents have repeatedly fired their weapons and killed people in their vehicles. ICE has continued to detain and deport thousands of New Yorkers who have contributed to our neighborhoods for decades— separating parents from their children and shipping off high school students. This is an unsustainable degree of impunity, cruelty, and recklessness that cannot be reformed.

While Trump has escalated ICE’s operations, this did not begin with him. Past administrations have been complicit in ICE’s growing abuse of power, and the agency’s cruelty will continue regardless of who sits in the White House. We applaud recent efforts by congressional Democrats to block funding to Trump’s ICE and Border Patrol, but we must go further. We can no longer ignore the threat that ICE, which has only existed since 2002, poses to our communities and to our democracy.

For the safety of our constituents and to restore public trust and the rule of law, we call on you and all congressional Democrats to publicly support the abolition of ICE and to leverage your positions to defund and dismantle this rogue federal agency.
