A week and a half ago there was a small crash between a bus and (I think) a semi trailer. Half the bus concertina, ripped open and rippled. For the last week a piece has been sitting on the side of the highway. Naturally hoarder instincts told me to grab it. Formed in a fraction of a second.
A piece of aluminium with some green paint, bent and rippled as the result of the side of a bus being torn open in a crash on the Mitchell Highway on August 31. This sign is a great example for helping to explain why chatbots present such a potent illusion. A probably not short thread 🧵>>
Photo of a sign with a doorbell attached. The printed sign reads:

CURRENT GUGGENHEIM ACCES BY HUSKY CARD ONLY
[Logos for Amazon, FedEx, UPS]
DELIVERIES/VISITORS
PLEASE RING THIS DOORBELL

Delivery hours M-F 9:00am-(obscured)
University of Washington

Taped next to the doorbell is a hand written note that reads:
yes! it rang! Pelase wait 30 seconds before pressing again.
thanks!

100%. in 2022, the Cloud Appreciation Society (a real thing) hired me (flight, accommodation, meals & stipend) as AiR for 2 weeks at Blachford Lake, NWT. Over that time I did an introduction to oils class for 84 of the 92 people who were there for aurora watching. It was wonderful

Crap that’s amazing
Oh right, the AltText;
Truly phenomenal shot showing a full solar eclipse on the horizon with the edge of the sun just bursting out from the upper right hand corner over the darkened moon
In front of the sun, a skateboard ramp has been set up and hovering in mid air is a skateboarder in silhouette wreathed in dust giving the illusion of a flaming aura as it is illuminated by the sunlight streaming around the moon, the dust leading up from the ramp and surrounding the skateboarder

Recent status: watching someone that works at Zoom take a past due security training about not taking meetings in public spaces while he was on a train going between Copenhagen and Stockholm. He completed his training then had a sales meeting about volume discounts.
A photo of a Dell laptop screen taken between two train seats. The screen has a training video with the text "You never know who's sitting next to you" showing on it. The picture taker is sitting behind the person taking the training, so it's OK.

A wholesome story for nerds: On Saturday, I was signing books at a local bookstore for Independent Bookstore Day. The store had a signing-palooza with new authors every hour; toward the end of my hour, a woman came up and asked what my book was about. "Dictionaries," I said, and she lit up. 1/n

🪶 A spotted towhee decided this was a good branch while I was looking out for birds of prey. This is the best shot I got of the striking red eye but it takes a 100% crop to see.
A tree with branches generally going from lower left to upper right. The largest branch has a bird sitting on it facing away from the camera. The bird is the size of a large sparrow and has a red and white underside, dark tail, spotted white and black wings, and a black cap. It's left red eye is barely visible.A 100% crop of the other image showing that the image is slightly blurred/doubled. The red eye and black pupil are visible in the center of an image of a spotted towhee bird showing part of the head, eye, and a white spot on the wing looking from the top to the bottom of the image.

🪶 A couple of starlings drew me in to take a shot and when I downloaded the image I realized that most of the woodpecker holes have acorns in them! Some busy creature has taken advantage of the storage.
2 starlings (dark, black, iridescent, speckled birds about 10 cm tall) sit atop a dead tree, stripped of its bark and broken with tens of woodpecker holes visible and the majority of them have a single acorn in them. Some larger holes have more than one acorn!

Realized today that it's been a hot minute (OK, 7 months) since I've posted any nature photos so here's a chrysalis! I had to move this one a few feet to keep it safe so it's tied up with some thread.
Green chrysalis tied with white thread to a green stalk across the top of the image. The chrysalis is hanging vertically.

The chrysalis is lighter green than the stalk and has black speckled across the top third that is in focus. About a quarter of the way down is a nubbly line that almost goes all the way around. The line is gold on top and black on the bottom and appears to be very thinly white where the 2 other colors meet.

Out of focus in the bottom quarter of the chrysalis 3 golden dots can be seen in an arc from the top dot on the left to the bottom dot on the right 10% of the way from the bottom.

My cartoons for this week’s @theguardian.com books #holiday #vacation #reading
A happy book says:
I'm so proud you chose me as your holiday read! I can't wait to start entertaining you!

A smiling drink says:
And I'm right here! Ready to keep you cool and refreshed while you read!

A gleeful phone adds:
Yay! So great! How about we kick things off with a load of the same old rubbish you always look at, plus some gloomy news and mavbe a few emails from work!!

Hours later...

The drink and book lie untouched.

The phone is out of view but a bubble reads:
Scroll Scroll Scroll Scroll Scroll

The book says
“I hate that guy.”

This sounds better than too much social talk into standups. I'm not opposed to some, especially as it feels like the only opportunity some people have as a relief valve, but having to gently keep the meeting on topic to respect group time pains me because I want people to have social growth too.

i’m so sorry you had to find out this way but all-dressed chips are just chip bukkake
a cartoon drawing of the retro old dutch chip flavour mascots. all-dressed is kneeling on the ground, eyes half-closed in ecstasy. sour cream is kneeling in front of him and sucking him off while green onion fucks him from behind. onion is also pulling his own hair for a little bit of extra umf. salt, vinegar, and ketchup are all jerking off and jizzing on all-dressed. all are having a fantastic time. good for them.

A favorite piece of airport art from Boston Logan for #inverteFest
A metal and glass piece of art of an octopus. The head is various shades of blue glass blown inside 2 metal pieces. The eyes are white glass with black glass for linear pupils. The arms are metal curling around in different directions with patches of 'coloring' made by pieces of metal. The art is installed in front of an undersea photo showing rocks and coral and also visible are a metal urchin and some rocks.
