#31DaysofGraves Day 4 Entrance L is for Lychgate, a wonderful illustration by @landisblair.bsky.social for A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death, available worldwide. Lychgate: A gate between the land of the living and the dead, marking the boundary between consecrated and unconsecrated soil.
Black and white drawing of a roofed structure with open gates where a wheeled bier and hatted mourners stand. A veiled woman stands at the entrance of the gate. A church tower stands in the background and there are trees and a fence next to the roofed structure--a lychgate, because monuments in a cemetery can be seen in the background.

T is for Tear Bottle, an entry in A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death brilliantly illustrated by @landisblair.bsky.social Available worldwide Spoiler alert: If you believe that tear bottles were an actual Victorian mourning practice, you will be disappointed. #TheVictorianBookoftheDead

Making a stretch: X is for Sexton - an entry in A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death, illustrated with the perfect gothic touch by @landisblair.bsky.social (Available world-wide) It was said that sextons tapped swelling lead coffins and lit off the gases which burned for up to half an hour.
Black and white drawing a man wearing a shirt, vest, and bowler hat, standing in a bricked, arched vault, putting a hole in a coffin while a plume of gas shoots out. A lantern stands by the second coffin supporting the first and there is a skull and various bones lying in piles of debris. The illustration for the "Sexton" entry in A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death.

G for Gates Ajar, one of the most popular Victorian/Edwardian funeral flower arrangements, from A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death, brilliantly illustrated by @landisblair.bsky.social [available world-wide] The motif comes from the 1868 novel of the same name by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps.
Black and white illustration of a grave covered with flowers and a "Gates Ajar" arch. There are trees and funeral monuments in the background. Two men in suits and a veiled woman in a long black dress are flanking the grave.Illustration in purple and white of a "Gates Ajar" funeral flower arrangement. M is for Mute, from A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death, delightfully illustrated by @landisblair.bsky.social and available worldwide. These lugubrious individuals had a reputation for nipping at the flask on the side, since they had to stand at their posts in cold, rain, and snow.
Black and white drawing of two Victorian funeral mutes wearing peaked hats, long coats, diagonal scarves, and carrying draped staves that look like brooms covered in cloth. They stand before door draped with crape to indicate a bereaved household. One of the mutes is taking a swig from a flask while the other mute gives him the side-eye.Blue-grey cover for A is for Arsenic, An ABC of Victorian Death, by Chris Woodyard, Illustrated by Landis Blair. A man and woman in Victorian mourning clothes flank a stone tomb topped with a skull and backed by a weeping willow. The veiled woman raises her hands as if in denial, while the man, with a weeper on his hat, covers his face with his hand.

W is for Weepers (as opposed to a "weed," which was the mourning hatband without streamers), another brilliant illustration from @landisblair.bsky.social for A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death, available worldwide. Weepers were the male equivalent of the mourning veil.
Black and white drawing of a top hat on a table in front of a floral background. The hat has a long tailed scarf tied to it as a hatband. There is a pair of cloves, a mourning card, and a ring sitting on the table in front of the hat.

#CemeterySaturday Art by @landisblair.bsky.social for "Churchyard"--from A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death. [Available worldwide] In large cities churchyards were often packed to capacity with corpses; horror stories were told of stenches, disease, resurfacing bones and decaying flesh.

F is for Fisk, one of my favorite illustrations from A is for Arsenic: An ABC of Victorian Death, brilliantly illustrated by @landisblair.bsky.social. Available worldwide. Inventor Almond D. Fisk was a designer of cast-iron stoves; he engineered the cases to preserve corpses shipped long distance.
