It’s the 112th anniversary of Mr Rée’s birth today, so here’s a thread about his extraordinary life (which prompted several people last year to observe, regardless of his sandals/socks decision, that Harry was “smoking hot”)

Again, a fundamental issue with trying to cover the anti-trans movement is that explaining that they are habitually insincere and so routinely chose transphobia over women's rights does make you sound conspiratiorial, and yet...

What would I be prepared to do to fight fascism? The perennial question. But not posting on Twitter seems a pretty small ask. Amazed how many people I have admired are still doing it.

The decision of so many people to keep using X in its race-war phase has made me a bit more cynical overall about the ability to draw moral red lines. It’s beyond disappointing.

Every time I turn on the News, someone is discussing who *might* be Chancellor and what that *might* mean. These are good and important questions, but they are not "News". We need to find a way to shift the dial back to reporting on what *has* happened, rather than speculating on what *might*.

Times argues that Labour sticking to its plans fro remigration and deportation is the only way to stave off Farage - because that's worked so well so far. There is no appeasing these people, and no point in trying and the sooner govt realises that the better. www.thetimes.com/comment/the-...
ut Ms Mahmood believes the changes are essential, both for maintaining social cohesion and limiting the burden on public services. As things stand, some 1.6 million people will be eligible for ILR status by 2030, granting them greater access to the welfare state. She also believes changing the system is the only way of seeing off the political threat from Nigel Farage. She is right on all counts.

Palantir is owned and run by techno-fascist crazies who are allied to the Trump regime. Whatever efficiency gains using them promises the UK should not allow critical state functions to become dependent on their services, which we can reasonably fear will be used as leverage to blackmail us.

Even putting aside his policy platform and focussing on a personal level, Starmer's tendency to scapegoat aides, his treatment of civil servants, and his disrespect of his parliamentary colleagues have been hallmarks of his time in office and I just don't think they are "decent."

Same. I am from an immigrant family, marrying an immigrant, teaching immigrant students. It is *incredibly* hard for me not to see Mahmood's policies as a central and vicious betrayal of core values. This combined with Starmer's own rhetoric on the matter thoroughly disillusioned me on them.

Contrast this with what we do have a political language for: concerns about immigration, cultural decline, the supposed threat from trans people. This is the language of the great replacement theory, it is the language of white supremacist terror. And it is our common political language. 5/

Agreed: politics is the art of persuasion, and Labour has lost faith in its ability to make and win arguments. There's a lot of talk at present about "respecting voters". The best way to respect them is to tell the truth: to treat them as adults who can take bad news and who understand trade-offs.
