There is a gap in our Constitutional order when the President is a bad faith actor. So, we have to keep playing this game where shit that Trump makes up is taken as the truth, facts on the ground can change because of this, and it has to be disproved through a slow moving court process.

Lots of details missing but there is a process to de-register and evidence can be provided of the administrative error that will clear things up in court. It'd suck if this happened, but it's curable. She's 100% cooked if she voted though, and given that she can't remember, I can't speculate.

5/ I hope that this was all an accidental registration caused by a misunderstanding that can be cleared up. It'll be an annoying trip through immigration court, but in all fairness, anyone who has had a green card for 12 years could have become a citizen by now and avoided this whole headache.

1/ The little exclave where I live has been making the news again, this time because a Canadian Green Card holder was detained because she was (allegedly) registered to vote in the US and may have voted in a US election (she can't remember). Many people on the Internet are outraged. I am not.

In any event, she was issued a summons, and will get her day in court. If she was accidentally registered, she can work with Whatcom County to de-register, and provide evidence of same. If she voted, though, her time in the US is probably over - it's a near automatic loss of status.

I think the outrage is overblown here. It is illegal for non citizens to register to vote, and it's illegal for them to vote. If the federal government has reason to believe you have committed an immigration violation, they can detain you whenever/wherever they encounter you and issue a summons.

She was registered to vote in Washington, which is illegal if you're not a citizen. However, this has occasionally happened accidentally when improperly registered by the Department of Licensing when renewing a driver's license. There is a procedure to fix this. If she voted, though, she's cooked.
