When you design urban infrastructure to feel safe, enjoyable, and inviting, you'll find that people will use it and leave their vehicles either elsewhere or at home. If you don't see people walking or on bikes, it's not because they don't want to, it's because your urban landscape is hostile.

Speeding doesn't actually save you meaningful time. All it really accomplishes is aggressively increasing the chances that you kill yourself or someone else outside your vehicle. It's a mathematically flawed, entirely selfish risk.

Can you fix traffic congestion by building more and wider roads? Of course not, but we keep wasting a TON of public money trying and failing. Building car dependency fails everyone, including drivers. Watch one of MANY interviews @brenttoderian.bsky.social has done on this. #InducedDemand

Realizing the extent to which this is true wildly changed my opinions about how to deal with Trumpism, since they're never going to be satisfied unless they're actively dominating everyone else. You can't give them some concessions and go back to the status quo: they're reactionary revolutionaries.

Rotterdam wasn't always a cycling city, it was rebuilt post-WWII around fast traffic. Now cycling on its main routes is up 45% since 2010. Cycling UK's Tomos Owens spent a day there with the Dutch Cycling Embassy and pulled 3 lessons for British cities 🧵👇 buff.ly/q6Y3nR2

Helmets are often misinterpreted as the solution to safety. Put simply, they aren't. Helmets protect your head from an uncontrolled fall. Proper infrastructure is what protects you from multi-ton vehicles. Don't conflate the two, they are worlds apart.

There are many advocates that need to stop defending e-motos as if they're bicycles. The longer we pretend this scrutiny is unwarranted, the more damage it does to actual e-bikes, which are legitimate tools enabling people to safely and affordably ditch their cars.

After discovering @bicycledutch.bsky.social, a Tsinghua University professor advocated for the fietsstraat: where cyclists are the main users and cars are guests. Today, that idea has spread across Beijing: Hundreds of kilometres of bike-priority streets now form the backbone of the city’s network.

Imagine seeing a red light, a no-turn-on-red sign, a crosswalk, and a bikeway, then deciding the correct place to stop your 18-wheeler is on top of all of it.
A large tanker truck stopped across both a marked crosswalk and bikeway at an intersection. The truck’s rear wheels are at the stop line, leaving its cab and much of the tanker blocking the entire crossing.

One of the most pernicious myths about Dutch cities is they have always been designed for people, and are somehow finished with that process. In reality, places like Den Bosch spent decades accommodating growing volumes of motor traffic, often at the expense of public space, safety and liveability.🧵

What do the world’s most successful shopping streets have in common? They’re designed for people, not cars. It’s hard to enjoy strolling, browsing and city life when you’re surrounded by 2-ton metal boxes, traffic noise and toxic exhaust. Great retail starts with great public space.
