Juneau should put up a digital sign at the docks showing how many whales have been killed by cruise ships in the current season, like we do with moose on roadways.

Unbelievable, how much cruise ship regulation is deteriorating in Alaska ... www.juneauindependent.com/post/state-c...
Two Democratic Juneau state lawmakers who are members of the finance committees in their respective chambers — Rep. Sara Hannan and Sen. Jesse Kiehl — told the Juneau Independent on Monday the change to the inspection schedule came as a surprise since there was no mention of that possibility during budget discussions at the Alaska State Capitol during the past session.
"In fact, when I started hearing rumors about existing inspections getting dismantled I looked back to make sure I hadn’t missed anything in the budget process," Kiehl stated in an email. "I had not. The budget request was status quo, so this new radical reduction raises serious questions about what the Dunleavy administration plans to do with the money they asked the legislature for."

With all the Republican-condoned methane leakage along the way, on top of the cost of transporting, liquefying, shipping, re-gassing, and more transport, yes, it starts to look more polluting than local coal. Polluters don’t care.

Worse than coal? Debate intensifies over carbon impact of US gas imported to Europe
With 60% of Europe's liquefied natural gas imports now coming from the United States, the carbon footprint of this energy source remains fiercely contested.

How Scrubbers Work
How Scrubbers Work

• Air vs. Water Pollution: Systems swap air emissions for ocean contamination, allowing ships to burn cheap, high-sulfur fuel while complying with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.

• Open-Loop Systems: Pull in large volumes of seawater, spray it through exhaust stacks, and dump the resulting toxic mix overboard.

• Closed-Loop Systems: Recycle washwater onboard and store the remaining sludge for disposal on land.

Environmental Impacts

• Toxic Cocktail: Discharge contains sulfuric acid, heavy metals, soot, oil, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

• Marine Life Damage: Even extreme dilutions harm zooplankton, stunt crustacean development, and cause severe larval deformations in sea urchins and mussels.

• Volume: Individual ships can discharge up to 1,200 cubic meters of washwater per hour, totaling billions of tonnes globally each year.
