If you think it's crazy that one printer closing has caused ripple effects that have slowed down the entire book industry as we head into our busiest time of the year, remember that the even before the pandemic, the supply chain was thrown into complete chaos because Edwards Brothers closed in 2019.
, Some Books Miss On-Sale Dates
Challenges with getting copies of Josh Silver's Fruit Fly and Marlon James's The Disappearers are just two examples of a supply chain stretched thin this fall. New US tariffs on goods from Canada including paper, higher fuel prices, and the closure of the Coral Graphics plant in New York have all made it harder for publishers to reprint to fill demand, and print books on time in order to hold their original publication dates.

"The book manufacturing industry is experiencing elevated demand as publishers prepare for the fall season," Book Manufacturers International executive director Matt Baehr said. "Recent changes in available industry capacity, combined with seasonal demand and pressure on certain materials and components, have created a challenging production environment across the market."

For booksellers, the issues compound what is already an intense pre-holiday selling season. Penguin Random House and Harper Collins have contacted stores to tell them to expect delays in shipments, and booksellers report that other publishers are slower than usual as well.

In some stores, Harper titles have not arrived in time for their on-sale dates. Even popular backlist titles are hard to come by as booksellers experience longer wait times for reorders and publishers’ stated reprint dates come and go.

"As a bookseller, I'm worrying that this moves the needle towards digital books or audio," Daniel Goldin, owner of Boswell Book Company in Milwaukee, said.

According to Porter Square Books buyer Sarah Rettger, "the bigger issue [than initial shipments] is the titles that immediately go out of stock. We just saw our first copies of Fruit Fly in three weeks, and we've still got outstanding orders."

Harper has suggested to some booksellers they would be better off ordering from wholesalers. Ingram has been well stocked and has had standard delivery times, according to Astoria Bookshop owner Lexi Beach. Booksellers also say that they are rece…Harper provided the following statement: "There are a variety of issues across the supply chain causing delays. We are working closely with our partners to remedy things as quickly as possible."

This month's closure of the Coral Graphics plant on Long Island is a major contributor to the issue. Coral, which is owned by PRH parent company Bertelsmann, is used by PRH as well as many publishers to produce covers, inserts, and jackets. Their equipment is being moved to two other facilities, in Berryville, VA and Martinsburg, WV, but the New York facility's shuttering adds to production delays, since manufacturers can’t print text or bind books until the components are received.

"Penguin Random House has been managing through the industry's printing challenges by balancing and spreading our initial and reprint needs across a broad array of domestic and international partners, along with making daily adjustments to respond to demand," PRH spokesperson Claire Von Schilling said. "We have shifted publication dates for a very small number of releases where absolutely necessary."

As a result of the strain, publishers have moved on-sale dates and shuffled their inventory to new dates and different manufacturers. In some cases, publishers have dropped printing specs like foil on covers, and the lead times to put a book in production are longer.

SC Arts Commission moves up vote on LGBTQ+ orgs’ funding by 2 weeks, surprising the groups
The commission will now decide Oct.1 — 14 days earlier than expected — whether two LGBTQ+ arts organizations will receive grant funding after the groups were asked to re-prove their artistic merit.

cannot stress enough how much, if you're in any way a decision-maker in the book industry, you should be boycotting skyhorse entirely.
The advances were for two books that will be published by a company owned by Tony Lyons, a longtime friend and business associate of Mr. Kennedy who also sits atop a constellation of MAHA-related entities, including some that accept political contributions and corporate sponsorships from health-related companies.

Cheryl Hines, Mr. Kennedy’s wife, accepted $210,000 in consulting fees from MAHA Action, a nonprofit advocacy group also led by Mr. Lyons. It rallies supporters of Mr. Kennedy’s priorities on weekly broadcasts and backs health-related legislation, including a federal bill to end liability protection for vaccine makers.Mr. Kennedy has written numerous books for Skyhorse Publishing, and worked as a consultant to the company before he became health secretary. In financial disclosures required for his Senate confirmation, Mr. Kennedy said he had earned $451,000 as a consultant. Ms. Hines also received a $600,000 advance from Skyhorse for her memoir, according to the disclosure.

The disclosure records said that Mr. Kennedy would also be paid $10,000 for a third book called “America’s Path Back to Moral Leadership” and that two of the three books were already written.

Barnes & Noble Acquires Joseph-Beth Booksellers
Another well-known independent bookstore brand has been sold to Barnes & Noble, as Joseph-Beth Booksellers announced the sale of "their two bookstores and bistros located at The Mall at Lexington Green in Lexington, Ky. and Rookwood Pavilion in Cincinnati, Ohio."

Store owner and chair Robert Langley said in the announcement, "This decision was made for the continued success of Joseph-Beth Booksellers. For 40 years, Joseph-Beth has been more than a bookstore. It has been a gathering place for readers, families, local authors, teachers and neighbors. In honoring its importance to the communities its two stores serve and to support its future longevity, this decision was necessary."

As with BN's previous acquisitions of Tattered Cover and Books Inc. in bankruptcy sales, Joseph-Beth "will preserve its independent identity." The bookseller says that staff will remain in place, with the "added benefit of Barnes & Noble's resources and modernized operations," to support "Joseph-Beth Booksellers' brand and ongoing success."

CEO James Daunt says, "Joseph-Beth Booksellers has a storied history and wonderful bookstores, and we are very pleased to ensure their continuity. We especially look forward to welcoming the booksellers of these two distinctive bookstores into the company."

Mall owner Langley acquired the stores in 2011 at a bankruptcy auction.

Hothouse Bloom tore through me when I read it this year. I kept thinking about it. I read it again.
