"The Call" by Remedios Varo depicts a mystical figure in vibrant orange robes, exuding a radiant aura as it traverses a surreal hallway lined with shadowy figures embedded into the walls. Varo's painting combines elements of the fantastical and the introspective, reflecting her deep interest in mysticism and metaphysical exploration.

A not-so-long-ago quarrel and the fact that @thebrokenspine.co.uk is looking for #PoemsAbout #Rot made me write an experimental #haibun. Happy Friday! Cheers!
Rot in Hell

Through the glassiness of suburban stars, I stretch out my hand to tuck them in. With each one, the root of red bleeds as if the devil's a painter. I splay my fingers like paintbrush bristles and sway them across the horizon. They tickle the gates. Suddenly, I become the black ink of the galactic canvas amid the last traces of fiery red. At once, I can hear the shouts of my family and the screams of the doomed.

my offering this lovely fall friday for #PoemsAbout #Rot @thebrokenspine.co.uk I could probably write into this prompt endlessly, as a certified #RotEnjoyer, but this poem came out of me trying to write against some of the themes i tend to write into i hope autumn is treating you all well so far!
AGAINST YEARNING

i try to think
against yearning, to call
my power back, to press it hard
against my hopeless romantic
heart and my escapist tendencies
and my penchant for devotional
drowning, but when i try to swim
against that current, i find myself
caught in the swell, despite my
practiced doggy paddle,
my easy floating.

i try to write
against yearning, creating strict
routines and mandates on desire,
but my desire leads me back to
the muddy muse. i try not to
rot like a red leaf sinking
into this puddle
of sickly autumn rain…

but what else can rot do but rot?
what else does life do but decay?
what else does eros do
but chase?
i try to feel
something, anything
but this loathsome yearning
but i find myself
in my grayest fantasies,
leaning in to kiss a dream.

i find myself
pressing up against a ghost.

i try to work
against yearning
but it swallows me
and goddamn,
do i want nothing more
than to be devoured.

i try to push
this yearning away
but i am so good
at waiting, and yearning
always comes to those who wait.
sometimes, something else does.
most days, nothing comes,
especially not me.

i try to live
against yearning
but of course, i always find myself
against yearning, skin on skin,
heart to heart, cheek to cheek,
if only in my stray dog dreams.

the more i lean into
this solitary love affair,
the more i think
i wouldn’t change a thing.

Who Ever Heard That The Devil Was Dead?

we must silence our mothers.
we must silence our fathers.
the seed did not take.
the old linger.
the magik failed.
the brine from breasts.
the children in soot.
the world woke up flat.
built on backs.
built on feet.
built on backs.
we must chew this fruit.
we must eat this pit.
raise spattered hand.
to spattered mouth.

Slow Death

My mother's garden once held itself together
the way a thought survives a sleepless night,
each bed and border aligned
to some private geometry of care.

Now rot works through it
like a forgotten language returning
to the mouth.

Apples soften where they land.
Pears remain aloft, unchosen,
moons refusing their eclipse.

The shed folds inward by degrees,
its boards separating from one another
old friends who have exhausted
every story.
Rain collects in the bench.
The wood drinks and drinks,
remembering old thirsts.
The fence gives up its straight lines.
One panel lies down in the nettles,
gravity has won the argument.

Nothing is cleared.
Leaves gather,
brown receipts from a season
that no longer keeps records.

I walk there and feel
time changing shape.
Not passing, but thickening.

Everything she touched
continues the cycle without her.

The trees stand crowded with
their unfinished offerings,
and death hangs on the branches:
a bruised apple
holding one square of light.

Got very vulnerable this episode: normally we are very strict about cutting pre-show banter, but this time I shared a poem I wrote (the first one I’ve written in a long time) because I wanted my good friend Joe to hear it. What happened was so meaningful I had to leave it in. I hope you like it.

The sun kisses one ocean goodbye, and another hello. Every end is a beginning somewhere.
Photo by Travis Rupert. The sun hovers just above the horizon, casting molten gold across the surface of gently rolling waves. The sea breathes in slow pulses, washing over the shore with a shimmer that stretches toward the camera like a path of light. Sky and water melt into each other, shifting from deep blue to soft amber, as if the world is holding its breath at the edge of day.

MISS ROSIE

when i watch you
wrapped up like garbage
sitting, surrounded by the smell
of too old potato peels
or
when i watch you
in your old man's shoes
with the little toe cut out
sitting, waiting for your mind
like next week's grocery
i say
when i watch you
you wet brown bag of a woman
who used to be the best looking gal in georgia
used to be called the Georgia Rose
i stand up
through your destruction
i stand up

We Have Enough Dead Friends
BY LENA OLEANDERSON

Come over. The doors are open,
my flat's a mess and
so is my heart
but the doors are always open.
Come over. I will make soup,
probably from frozen but
the important thing is
we will both eat.

You don't have to be dying,
but if you are,
or you feel like you are,
or if living's been hard,
call me, and I will show up.
It doesn't have to be that bad,
it doesn't have to be bad at all,
but if it is, please call.

Do you want me to do the groceries?
Do you want me to mop the floors?
Do you need to be held;
you don't have to be dying to be held.
If you want me to be there, I want to.

I'm on the bathroom floor again,
and breathing is hard,
and eating's been hard, and sleeping,
the world is a laden thing
rolling around on my chest lately.
Just being alive is heavy tonight,
but we have enough dead friends.
Come over.

well, i don’t know if i have ever posted about this but my “day job” is working at an adult entertainment store. and lately i’ve been tasked with doing the chalkboard (happens at any service job when they realize i’m artsy) and i can’t resist sharing this because it’s some of my best work yet 🤣
chalkboard design for the store i work at mentioned above. the text reads: “Let’s get Knotty, 15% off all bondage!” in bubble letters and cursive, done in purple, red and pink chalk marker. the word “knotty” is the percentage sign is also made out of a riding crop and handcuffs splayed over it. it is surrounded by hearts and drawings of various bdsm gear.

People aren’t faking their disabilities, they’re faking being well. We know society hates us. We know we will be judged for using assistive devices. Many of us take years to get the courage to lean in to accommodations. Stop judging. Help us build a more inclusive world.

#PoemsAbout #DeadLetters @thebrokenspine.co.uk It helps to know Bu Shi is a muse/alter ego I created in the early 2010s to post haiku/senryu, it also helps to know they don’t use the lettters L and T, but the poem uses all of the other letters. Our pseudo relationship is sometimes contentious.
DUBIOUS BU

bu emerges from a crack underground
open hand punch
hammering an arc of misshapen force

nor misspoken nor misheard

was a bad poem worsened
by jagged end rhymes
before even being conceived

weaned on my screams and misgivings

bad karma broken casino spinner
dopamine miser sucking my money sac
receiving receiving receiving never giving back

aces queens and princes join voracious jokers

oversized zippers sever
spewing sacred sera in free mason jars
examined by hydrographic surveyors

bu says form precedes usage

do you agree

dead letter

i wash the dishes
in the dark

because i know
where everything is.

the tap.
the soap.
the chipped glass
you always said
to throw away.

remember when
you said
nothing mattered
and i said nothing.

it does.

the glass slips.
i hear it break
somewhere in the sink.

for a while
i leave my hands
where they are.

the tap keeps running.

i am quiet.

you are far away.

or whatever
you are.

eventually
i put my hand
back in the water.
