I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

We will- I have no doubt- look back at this as one of the greatest scandals of our time. It he killing of the golden goose for the UK. A destruction of one of the most profitable and successful sectors.Yet, for now all politicians have their head in the sand on this one… A critically important read.

The Effects of California's $20 Fast Food
Minimum Wage on Prices
Jeffrey Clemens, Olivia Edwards, Jonathan Meer &
Joshua D. Nguyen
WORKING PAPER 34990
DOI 10.3386/w34990
ISSUE DATE March 2026
We analyze the effect of California's $20 fast food minimum wage (Assembly Bill 1228), enacted in September 2023 and implemented in April 2024, on consumer prices using the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Indices for food away from home across 21 metropolitan statistical areas. Food away from home prices in California's four in-sample MSAs increased by 3.3 to 3.6 percent relative to 17 control MSAs through December 2024. Our estimates are stable across a number of specifications. Placebo tests on price indices for goods and services that were not affected by the policy, including food at home, show no differential increases in California's MSAs.
The price increases we estimate likely arise in part from spillovers to the full-service sector, as well as changes in the production functions and product quality choices of limited service restaurants.

Forthcoming in AEJ: Economic Policy: "The Political Consequences of Mass Repatriation" by Edoardo Cefalà.

The Political Consequences of Mass Repatriation
(Forthcoming Article) - What happens when a country’s electorate suddenly expands by hundreds of thousands of new voters? This study examines the political impact of the mass arrival of repatriates from Algeria to France. Using this quasi-experiment, I demonstrate that their arrival caused significant changes in the French electoral landscape. In areas of exposure to their arrival, they increased the French electorate and reshaped the vote for right-wing parties. Furthermore, their presence influenced candidates’ electoral strategies, causing all candidates to shift their electoral manifestos towards pro-repatriate stances. This significant historical event influenced French political life, reshaping electoral dynamics and political strategies in France.

Related to that: in the UK, stamp duty (a transaction tax on property purchases) is effectively a regressive wealth tax. For most homeowners it's a one-off tax on wealth paid once or twice in a lifetime, and falls disproportionately on the middle class. (from upcoming work with @zhuowen.bsky.social)

Two points missing in recent Wealth Tax debates: - If we measure total taxes as a % of wealth (not income), the system is highly regressive - The wealthiest pay 3%-4% of their wealth annually in taxes. Wealth Tax shouldn't be seen as starting from zero (see US data from @gabrielzucman.bsky.social)
Average tax rates in the US in 2019 as a share of wealth. Tax declines from 30% for percentile 20 to 4% for the top wealth percentile.

Simply astonishing. Maybe Lecturer A should not have to mark over 100 essays in a two-week window in the first place? Invest in qualified staff and reduce impossible workloads FFS www.kcl.ac.uk/about/strate...
Screenshot. King's College London page. Examples of effective practice

The following scenarios follow the above guidelines and offer insights into ways that academic staff can use AI transparently and in an assistive capacity, always ensuring human oversight and judgment remain central.
Scenario A – Scaling feedback while maintaining quality

Lecturer A is responsible for marking over 100 essays within a two-week window.

Conscious of the limitations this workload places on the depth of individual feedback, they adopt a hybrid approach using their university’s approved or supported LLM tool, Copilot.

Without ever uploading student work directly, Lecturer A composes an anonymised summary for each student, noting which marking criteria were met and the approximate percentage achieved for each. They input this summary alongside the official rubric into Copilot, prompting it to generate supportive, criterion-referenced feedback. This feedback is then carefully reviewed, adapted, and personalised before being uploaded to the marking platform.

Students are made aware of this process in advance and shown a demonstration, reinforcing transparency and trust.
