Another element of 1990s nostalgia that often gets ignored is how the USA was gaga for Celtic and New Age music. Remember those CD kiosks in the big box stores?

Also related is the Italian word for association football : "calcio": "a kick, association football", which you may have noticed in the recent World Cup. (in English "association football" → "soc" → "soccer", in the pattern of late 19th-early 20thC Oxford slang)

And of course any time is a good time to mention that "calque" is a loanword from French "calque", but "loanword" is a calque from German "Lehnwort". Italian on the other hand calqued "calque" as "calco", a word it already had meaning "a tracing, a mold" to which it applied the French meaning

This is an entirely new phenomenon because before the vaccine, most women who survived measles were immune because they had it when they were young. But now, idiots who refuse to get vaccinated are giving birth to babies with measles. Two babies have died. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

America had wiped out measles. Now babies are infected at birth.
Congenital measles has rarely been seen in the U.S. That’s changing as vaccination declines and more pregnant women become infected.

If you are attacking trans people claiming that it's tactically savvy, then you cannot be upset when people who care about trans rights do not vote for you. There is no way it can be true that you are picking up more votes than it costs you, and that you lose an election because of lost votes.

I don’t see much good news nowadays, but this discovery has me *grinning*. An Egyptian mummy was found with THE ILIAD on its abdomen. Not some religious scripture, but Homer’s epic poem. It dates from from Egypt’s Roman period, so roughly sixteen centuries ago.
