We frequently carry on down the creek at the moment, to check on Mrs Goose from the park (she seems to have made her way down in search of love and got stranded (insert 'Where the hell is my Husband' here). Yestrday we also found a PENGUIN (who was collected by the colony). And ducklings. #nzbirds

Mercury Bay weed, Dichondra repens (#Convolvulaceae), flowering now in the garden, 6.5 mm across. Lots of nectar and extrorse anthers suggests at least a mixed mating system. #flowers 🌱🇳🇿 #botany

Small green flowers, 6.5 mm diameter. Five broad green hairy sepals; five narrower and paler petals about the same length; five small stamens; two styles, each with a rounded stigma. Stereo pair: for 3D viewing try to look at the right picture with the right eye and the left picture with the left eye, or use a stereopticon viewer like the one in my book. It's easier if you reduce the size so each frame is about 60 mm wide.

I have a real soft spot for Dunedin railway station, for mine the prettiest station in Australasia. When it opened in 1906 it was New Zealand's busiest railway station; today, alas, it is only used by tourist trains but hopefully the Southerner will ride again!

Okay so we want some duckling content, right? First ducklings at the park!! And Ngaire and Lefty are definitely nesting, possibly since as early as Aug 13, so their little cutie humbugs aren't far off. Two of the Goldie sisters AWOL too so I suspect we might have little yellow babes coming. 🪶🇳🇿

It's locals week at the Ōamaru penguin colony so we're spending the evening watching little blue penguins coming in to their nesting boxes ♥️🐧

A view from the bleachers at the penguin colony. They will arrive from the sea and walk over to the right and come down between us all as we sit here. Apparently this is the best spot to sit! No photography allowed during the event though.

Nine Lives was thought to have killed around three-quarters of the rare pāteke, or brown teal, released on the Purerua Peninsula in the northern Bay of Islands.
Pest-free Purerua-Mataroa coordinator Andrew Mentor said those 20 pāteke made up about 1 percent of the world population of the flightless native duck.
It was likely Nine Lives had also made meals out of many a kiwi chick.
