I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Reading proofs from book & remembering what I wrote in 2015: "I am very concerned about the future of AI. Not because of the risk of rogue machines taking over. But because of the homogeneous, one-dimensional group of men who are currently involved in advancing the technology.”

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

Just absolutely wild to see so many people discovering the massive influence of the rationalists in real time and say things like "I wish I could unlearn what I've learned in the last 24 hours." I, and others, have been researching these people for YEARS. There is so much I wish I could unlearn.

Macklemore just shared that he’ll be donating his net tour earnings ($1 million) to 6 Palestinian aid orgs, and invited billionaire Robert Kraft to do the same. Calls for people to focus back on Palestine. “When the news cycle moves on, which it will, don't move with it. Free Palestine.”
Post from Macklemore of white text on a black background. Caption reads: These are the organizations I am donating to. I invite you to join if you're able
@thepcrf
@heal.palestine @gazasoupkitchen @medicalaidpal @unrwausa
@aneraorg

Post text:
With everything that has happened over the last 48 hours, I want to bring the conversation back to where it belongs: to the Palestinian people who are still being killed, still living under military occupation, and still fighting for their freedom.
I will be donating the entire $1 million of my net earnings from Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour to six organizations working directly to support the Palestinian people. And I invite Robert Kraft to match my donation. Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting. A Palestinian life is no less valuable than any other life on this earth.That is what this has always been about. Not me. Not a tour. Not the headlines or the controversy. It is about Palestinians right to freedom, dignity and safety in their own homeland.
I want to center the parents carrying their children into hospitals without the basic resources to treat them, and the physicians, paramedics, journalists and aid workers who keep going back in. I want to center the organizers and activists who have paid real costs for standing with Palestine. Their risk is of a far different order than mine.Just yesterday, 15 year old Muhammad al Zinati was killed in an Israeli strike while rushing to help aid worker Sherif Lubbad, who had already been injured.
He was a child. Both were murdered. Both should be alive.
And the ones still under the rubble, whose names exist only in the memories of people who may not have survived to speak them.
Writing a check is one of the least costly forms of solidarity available to me. I am doing it because I can, and because these organizations are doing the work while much of the world debates it.But aid alone cannot address the conditions that make it necessary. This is a manmade injustice, and | believe it requires immediate political change.
Palestinians have lived for decades without basic rights and should not have to wait another day to be free.
That is where my focus will remain. I will continue to stand with the Palestinian people and their fight for liberation.
When the news cycle moves on, which it will, don't move with it.
Free Palestine.

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:
Erin Redwing
@realizingerin
I went to an rationalist/EA Al doomer event last night with the goal of meeting someone who could calmly explain to me the argument for how they get to the conclusion that Al will kill everyone.
Because these are rationalists, I expected to find people who could lay out a serious extinction pathway, walk through the assumptions and intermediate steps, identify choke points where negative pathways could potentially be regulated, and entertain disagreement about where their assumptions might break down.
My experience was the exact opposite.
The people I spoke to seemed psychologically unable to entertain the possibility that their conclusion (that Al literally kills everyone, which was a point that many would not even budge on) might be wrong.
Their most extreme conclusion was treated as an axiom.
I had multiple people walk out of conversations with me when I questioned their inevitable extinction premise.
At one point during a panel, the moderator asked everyone in the audience who was still skeptical of Al doom to raise their hands. About half the room did. He then told all of the skeptics to leave the panel and go with one of the speakers, who would answer their questions separately. They filtered out all the skeptics, and continued the panel only with the subset who accepted their extreme position.
I genuinely felt like a heretic just for questioning whether superintelligent Al inevitably leads to the extinction of humanity, or entertaining the possibility that the future might actually turn out well.
That does not mean Al safety is fake. Obviously there are serious questions about rapidly advancing Al systems and what happens as they become much more capable. Those are exactly the conversations I went there hoping to have.
But what I encountered was an apocalyptic death cult. These people are not rational. They are deeply afraid, they reinforce that fear in one another, and they have become so emotionally committed to apocalypse

It's unbelievable how gullible people have to be to take their narrative explanation at face value, and how deeply irresponsible the AI labs have to be at bog standard cybersecurity practices for this to keep happening if they weren't doing it on purpose.

Are they getting access to the nuclear codes and hypnotizing the president into using them? They are referring to bank/infrastructure hacks and exaggerating.

The other issue is that it's not just fundamentally rooted in capitalism, but in a very particular death cult of it. There are so many better, easier, smarter tools that you could build with these same principles, and the reason they're going with this instead is because they're in that cult

Every time I hear climate/enviro folks casually say the 1.5°C target is dead, I think of Asad Rehman's 2020 post on Ambassador Lumumba Di-Aping's intervention in the Copenhagen talks in 2009—“certain death for Africa”, “climate fascism” imposed on Africa by high carbon emitters
19 Nov 2020 tweet from Asad Rehman

"When I hear net zero 2050 l always remember Ambassador Lumumba (the Chair of the G77) at the Copenhagen climate talks in 2009 when he said 2c "certain death for Africa", & a type of "climate fascism". The UK, EU, Obama's US supported by big northern NGOs opposed 1/1.5c target.
1/"

Image shows 3 men, the gentleman in the centre is lead G77 negotiator, Lumumba Di-Aping of SudanScreenshot of a thread of 3 tweets from Asad Rehman continuing from previous tweet (19 Nov 2020)

"He sat silently, tears rolling down his face, put his head in his hands & said "We have been asked to sign a suicide pact." & that Africa is being asked to "celebrate" this deal for $10 billion. "$10 billion is not enough to buy us coffins". This is a colonisation of the sky 2/"

"The global North want to ignore historical emissions & allow their citizens to carry on emitting & prevent African countries from lifting their people out of poverty. "It is unfortunate that after 500 years-plus of interaction with the West we are still considered disposables"."

"I would rather die with my dignity than sign a deal that will channel my people into a furnace." He called for "One Africa, One degree" & "Two degrees is suicide". It was clear then that rich country govts & big NGOs were more than happy to sacrifice the global South. 4/"Screenshot of a thread of 3 tweets from Asad Rehman continuing from previous tweet (19 Nov 2020)

"Now despite the science, the urgency, the devastating impacts we are told that 2030 targets are radical & we should be pragmatic. Anti-racists & #climate justice activists should not accept 'channeling the people of the global South into the furnace' by supporting net zero 2050"

"In 2009 global South countries were calling for cuts of 80% by 2030 by rich countries & to pay their climate debt because even then the IPCC said 2c globally means 3.5c across every region of Africa. Since then the science is even clearer that preventing a breach of 1.5c is key"

"Today the UK is 16th highest global emitter, 6th highest historically, responsible for 3.5% of global emissions. Just to meet it's fairshare of emissions cuts for the 1.5c budget - it would be -200% by 2030 so it would need to be at zero by 2030 & transfer £1 trillion to the poor"

Hyperscale data centres are a great example of the tech industry's inability to read the room. The vibe is *all wrong*. They're the physical instantiation of extractive "repent never" capitalism and no amount of whatabouting about "actually they use less water than you think" makes that better.

4 panel comic

Panel 1:
A post from “kavishj9611” that reads:

“All the people who are anti-Al or want to slow Al progress, I have one question:
If Al disappeared tomorrow, could you still get through an entire workday without ChatGPT, Claude, or any other
Al tool?
Imagine Al was suddenly banned.
Would you actually be willing to give it up?”

Panel 2:
And Orange Guy and a Pink Guy are standing in a room that has two pipes in it. Both pipes are pumping raw sewage into the room. The characters are waist deep in it.
Orange Guy says smugly “Ok Mr “I don’t want to be in a room that’s filling up with raw sewage” let me ask you this”

Panel 3:
The sewage has reached their chests. Pink Guy is gagging. Orange Guy smugly continues “If all this sewage disappeared right now, could you get through the day without it?”

Panel 4:
The sewage is almost up to their eyeballs. Orange Guys says “Look at that shit floating past your face. Are you willing to give that up?”
