Remember when us phil-tech types said effective altruism was just utilitarianism taken to its worst possible extents? This is what we meant: Real harm for unquantifiable potential benefit. "…'we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology….'"

The BEST thing that true believers in AI could do is stop evangelizing to people, like me, who think it sucks. Do the hard, years-long work of detaching your beloved technology from the worst people in the world right now: shameless fascists driven by greed and domination. They’re YOUR partners.

I think the funniest opinion I see on a regular basis these days is the brain-rotted idea that someone must be conversant with or operate LLMs in order to have a valid opinion on them, and there's the inbuilt assumption that if you WERE you wouldn't be a hater. HOWEVER:

You can't go work for a bad organization, make a whole lot of money and when things start to turn (and the house is paid off) jump ship and expect me to just take you in. That is not how any of this works. I need to see actual amends being made.

How on Earth did I not read this yet? really interesting and honestly kind of brazen modelling of the entire lifecycle - downstream, data centres, upstream use - of AI. Puts AI industry at 1.1% of total global energy, about the same for global emissions. More than 10x previously stated estimates
Final Results and Concluding Thoughts
Adding it all up, we estimate that the AI sector is responsible for almost 1,900 TWh of global energy consumption in 2026. And after accounting for additional factors that we did not explicitly analyze, like the construction of new electrical substations, robotic-centric warehouses, water reclamation facilities, and other infrastructure specifically designed to support the data center buildout, it’s likely that total AI-driven global energy demand is already closer to 2,000 TWh. Even at 1,900 TWh, the AI share of total global energy use in 2026 would be roughly 1.1%. We also estimate, after adding up all the sectoral numbers and landing at roughly 650 million metric tons of AI-driven CO2 emissions, that the AI share of global GHG emissions in 2026 stands at about 1.2%, with total annual global emissions sitting at roughly 55 gigatons of CO2-eq, albeit with a wide range of figures from EDGAR to UNEP (anywhere from 53 gigatons to 58 gigatons depending on a broad array of different assumptions). As we’ve discussed already, these numbers are much higher than many others in the media and academia have guessed on the basis of simplistic calculations and naïve assumptions.

The projections up to 2030 are obviously far worse and imply a catastrophic impact to global ecological stability. ChatGPT alone “processes approximately 2.5 billion prompts per day worldwide.”122 The scale of AI growth and diffusion globally is truly astounding, and the industry’s corresponding ecological footprint will soon rival that of major countries like India. It's not farfetched at all to think that the AI share of total global energy demand could rise to something like 5% by 2030, rivaling and in some cases surpassing the footprint of established dominant industries. The potential consequences of this extra resource pressure on biodiversity, global warming, freshwater scarcity, and biogeochemical cycles could be absolutely staggering and devastating for the…

The only source of there being any kind of productivity boost in software is from the people who have had their brains fried by the "discovery" you can brute force a bunch of stolen code into compiling. Anyone still in this industry that hasn't been fried sees these people doing overtime for less.

There's a defeatist vibe rn and I think there's an inevitability feeling washing over us. There is no inevitability. If you're in a position to speak up against the direction the industry is taking, I'd say now is the time to do that. I certainly try because I cannot be fired and it does help!

GenAI is what I am going to optimistically call "pre-systemic" - it hasn't been baked in yet. And the stakes are HIGH, bc once baked in, the climate impacts push it up into a high category among the plastics industry, agriculture etc So....what that means is that heavy users *are* morally culpable

NIMBYism is considered bad and no good because of the hypocrisy. The very obvious insinuation is that you'd be fine with whatever it is were it built elsewhere. A lot of very stupid people however continue to try and apply this to things that shouldn't be in anyone's backyard.

When the trillion dollar industry can just lie and get away with it for months until someone debunks it I do in fact think it's important to: 1) Never trust it 2) Refuse to be impressed by its products 3) Violently pushback on even the most subtle narratives of capability and productivity

Question for the AI boosters (not that any follow me lol) - if LLM's are recursively self-improving, why do any of these people have these jobs in the first place?

These guys are 100% having a one-sided language war. 15-20 years ago the guy referred to here would've been writing screeds all night on some forum about the benefits of their personal favorite IDE.

Kwaze Kwaze @kwazekwaze.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Maybe a better analogy is: The LLM guys are all screaming at us over how stupid we are for using tabs instead of spaces while we're just constantly summarizing Silent Spring for them in 300 characters.

What these people are ultimately trying to say is they have a preference for using chatbots as a computer interface. Their ego won't let them just say that though. Which isn't new. These guys are basically having a language war. They're insisting you use the gui because the cl sucks and ur dum

If you accept the latter, the first statement here should strike you as needlessly laudatory, borderline boosterism. You're not impressed by the LLM's actions you're impressed by the underlying stolen work being surfaced to you. Resist the urge to be impressed with how well theft works.

Neural networks did not work UNTIL they got all that data. Raw data is useless without immense human labour to clean and store it in massive data centres. GPUs which are also required need rare earth minerals. On and on. AI only works because we're dedicating all of a massive industry to it.

Fixed that for you.
An image of academic fields arranged by purity. in ascending order: sociologists, psychologists, biologists, chemists, physicists, and mathematicians furthest to the right. Underlying all of them are epistemological philosophers who appear to be supporting the whole thing.

While this is technically true, many fields owe their existence to philosophy or draw directly upon philosophy for its theories. The American Psychological Association, for example, used to meet concurrently with philosophy and William James and John Dewey were founding members.

That said, the argument about purity of fields is largely useless as fields developed to engage in inquiry into specific areas. To put them in competition is to fail to realize that we all can learn something from the other and that no one field has a claim to ultimate truth. Not even philosophy.
