Whenever these kinds of threads arise, I want to recommend Gari Ledyard’s “The Korean Language Reform of 1446” … but sadly it seems to be out of print. Excellent book though, if you can find a copy. www.goodreads.com/book/show/99...

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

The purpose of American zoning is to put the most people—low- and middle-class families—in the worst locations so that the best locations, the quiet, elevated side streets, can be reserved for a small number of wealthier people. Everything else is just kind of window dressing.

Yes, well: a home was lost, but all for the greater good and ongoing enlargement of Mark Zuckerberg's Palo Alto multi-mansion compound. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/10/u...
Mr. Zuckerberg has purchased at least 11 homes on two streets since 2011.

Several of his properties sit empty in a notoriously crunched housing market. He has turned five of them into a compound with a main house for him, his wife, Priscilla Chan, and their three daughters, along with guest homes, lush gardens, a nearby pickleball court and a pool that can be covered with a hydrofloor. A seven-foot statue depicting Ms. Chan in a silver, flowing robe that Mr. Zuckerberg commissioned last year sits on the property.

The compound is encircled by a high row of hedges, and there is no such thing as knocking on the front door to borrow a cup of sugar. One of the unoccupied buildings is used for entertainment and as a staging ground for outdoor parties.Underneath the compound, Mr. Zuckerberg has added 7,000 square feet of space — cavernous areas that his building permits refer to as basements, but that his neighbors call bunkers or even a billionaire’s bat cave. The work has led to eight years of construction, filling the streets with massive equipment and a lot of noise.

Mr. Zuckerberg has also brought intense levels of surveillance to the neighborhood, including cameras positioned at his homes with views of his neighbors’ property. He has a team of private security guards who sit in cars, filming some visitors and asking others what they are doing as they walk on public sidewalks.

Aaron McLear, a spokesman for Mr. Zuckerberg and Ms. Chan, said the couple tried hard to do right by their neighbors. Meta requires heavy security for its chief executive, he said, because of specific, credible threats. Cameras are not trained at neighbors, and they adjust them when asked, he said.

FYI there is no "real" reason why Rome "fell." Its power waned for the usual, mundane reasons: widening gap between rich and poor, inability to maintain infrastructure, incompetent leadership, pointless wars, endless persecution of marginalized groups who performed vital labor, etc.
