My post-industrial techno act - mainly comprising the clattering of keypads, the hiss of the coffee machine, and the Teams notification sound - has been wrongfully non-platformed by many of Manchester's so-called "forward-thinking" music venues

The image is of a four panel comic. The title reads "Poltergeist".
In the first panel we see a woman with a worried expression on her face. She says, "stuff keeps moving around my house."
In the second panel the same woman says "I'm terrified. I can't sleep."
In the third panel we see a ghost holding a candle and a pillow that reads "live laugh love". The ghost is zooming through the house.
In the fourth panel we see the same ghost hanging up a frame and thinking, "home decor is my passion".

What's going on?
000
Stewart @stewmh.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
As far as we know, there's nothing else out there like that. For instance, we think dark matter particles exist but it's not guaranteed that we can actually produce them with a collider or find them with a dedicated experiment. So we are in terra incognita

Stewart @stewmh.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It's interesting to note that the Higgs is the easiest way to solve this issue with the theories. The Higgs boson fits in in lots of other ways as well, this is just a neat one that doesn't need too much physics background.
110
Stewart @stewmh.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Before the LHC found the Higgs (spoiler) in 2012, all of these possibilities were available. The LHC would definitely reach enough energy to see what was happening. And indeed it was discovered.
110
Stewart @stewmh.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
So we need a way out of our Probability(WW) going over 100%. Turns out there are 3 options: 1)Higgs boson with roughly the right mass 2)Some other particle with roughly the right mass 3)Change in the theory to keep the probabilities in check
110
Stewart @stewmh.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Unitarity is the statement that all the probabilities have to add up to 100%. E.g. if we have a die and the probabilities are 1: 1/6 2: 1/6 3: 1/6 4: 1/6 5: 1/6 6: 3/6 this adds up to 8/6 > 100%, doesn't make sense. We say physical theories have to respect unitarity: all probs add up to 100%
110
Stewart @stewmh.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
We can calculate Probability(p p -> W W) and see if this changes if we increase the energy of the protons (i.e. accelerate them faster). You find that Probability(WW) goes over 100% after 1.2 TeV (high but accessible at colliders).
110
Stewart @stewmh.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
A special case of this is if we look at proton + proton -> W boson + W boson where we are looking for two heavy particles known as Ws. Exactly what they are doesn't matter because we can make a general argument
100
Stewart @stewmh.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
There are rules about how often different particles are produced. If you measure the output particles and how much energy the collision had, you end up with a spiky graph where each spike matches the energy threshold to produce the particle
110
Stewart @stewmh.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
When they collide, the quarks within interact and can produce new particles, transferring their input energy. Exactly which new particles are produced each time is fully random - not because we can't measure or predict well enough, but because quantum mechanics is random.

Unitarity and the Higgs boson: one thing that didn't make it into @jonnelledge.bsky.social's article, I think partly because I mentioned to him while he was distracted by a new housing estate on the bus to Harwell Campus. Let's start with two particles (protons) and let's make them collide
