And just turning on generates an obligation not to turn it off. Even temporarily truning it off is problematic due to consent. And it would deserve a vote. But what if Elon made 50 million of them to dominate elections?

Drivers will never slow down. You have to narrow the roads, build in speed bumps and other traffic calming measures, install speed cameras that automatically issue tickets for speeding, and impound vehicles and put people in jail for multiple violations. Pedestrian injury & death is a civic choice.

There's a little renaissance of indie computer wargames going on and it's pretty clear this is due to vibecoding. So, for one thing, impressive what vibecoding can do. Finally seeing multiple new versions of Steel Panthers-style games. But also, how much copyright theft happens in Claude code?

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

One thing non-Minnesotans don’t quite get (understandably) is that the murders were not even the thing that pushed the city into mass mobilization. It was that you could sit on the street corner and watch half a dozen cars full of masked cretins drive by in 30 minutes.

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

All this has gotten more complicated because America murdered 100 schoolgirls and the grandchildren of Iran's supreme leader. Iran here is targeting a military installation using asymmetric guerilla warfare, the only tactic available to them. So what right do we Americans even have to complain?

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Which is also really a problem for all science fiction. A nuclear missile would take out anything *real*, so you invent force fields and magic metal so that alien tech doesn't get vaporized or future wars aren't just nukes in space -- where, btw, almost all the downsides of nukes wouldn't apply.

Read the article because the discussion is quite good. I do wonder about the extent the arguments against wealth taxes also apply against property taxes, especially since property taxes are wealth taxes predominantly paid by the middle class. But, of course, a big problem in CA is Prop 13.

One of the concepts in American politics that used to exist and be spoken of aloud was the idea of "premature anti-fascism." A lot of people suffered in 1930s America because they were anti-fascist before WWII, when it became acceptable and proper to be anti-fascist.

(if necessary) pungently coarse French. When he asked me where I had learned it, I told him that I had fought in 1936 on the northwest sector of the Madrid front in the French Battalion of the XIth International Brigade. “Oh,” he said, “You were a premature anti-Fascist."
