I'm not avoiding Twitter because it's a hellhole. I'm avoiding it because Elon's a nazi.

You do understand there's a big difference between that and Zuckerberg himself calling for a race war?

Also, I'm no Zuckerberg fan, but he's not pushing ethnofascism or trying to stoke race wars, so both-sidesing Musk and Zuckerberg is some creep shit.

If you need a pickmeup, Ukraine struck and destroyed a Russian data center last night, reducing Russian bot traffic by 50%, dropping online pro-AfD discussion to zero, cratering MAGA traffic, and making Elon big mad. Just in time for the mid-terms. Slava fucking Ukraini.

Ukraine blows up Russian data centres and immediately and mysteriously online talk about Germany’s Far Right AfD virtually disappears. Stop Putin you stop the Far Right.

Also, the magical seduction scene has a narrative function in this movie, but then I read Mallory and all the knights would go out on quests, sleep with some hot chick, then come home and say they were totally ensorceled by an enchantress. Yeah. That's the ticket.

John Boorman’s EXCALIBUR finally comes to the PCC Fri 6th Nov. We’ve wanted to show this one for ages. It's one of the great Arthurian films: gleaming armour, misty forests and a version of Camelot that feels mythic. 🎟️: buff.ly/mwOlC0x

- and that's because we don't think it has intent at all.
100
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 20h
But I'm not talking about the reliability part at all, I'm talking about the intentionality driving the answer. Humans have intentionality and sometimes they make honest errors and sometimes they lie with an intent to deceive. But I don't think anybody believes the LLM is intending to deceive -
100
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 20h
So I don't completely rule out LLMs. But right now they're making the kinds of errors that persons don't make.
100
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 20h
We can cut a lot of slack or not do it at all for humans because we know the machinery they're using is the same as ours. I always assumed the software structure for a true AI would be some sort of neural net, an electronic version of our brains -- but I wouldn't rule out other structures.
100
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 20h
Also, there's not going to be necessary and sufficient conditions. We're going to look at a totality and try to estimate if what going on inside it is what's going on inside our heads. Ex Machina's version of the Turing Test felt right -- long and arduous and basically a guesstimate at the end.
100
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 20h
But the LLM isn't doing any one of those. If a person makes up something to fill in the blank you'd be mad at them because you'd know they did it on purpose. Would you be mad at the LLM, or at the maker of the LLM?
200
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 20h
The LLM is just recognizing the pattern that papers use citations/legal precedents and so its including something that looks like one at that spot in the paper. But understanding the content of statements is a key part of my consciousness, maybe even one of the most important.
110
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 20h
Thus, when an LLM fabricates a citation in an article, or a non-existent legal case to use as precedent in a legal brief, people don't say it's lying. We've re-purposed the term hallucinating. And I think we're right to do so. Lying requires intention.
110
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 20h
Just to be clear, by "structural mechanisms" I don't mean here physical structures, but the software-esque operations. So LLMs appear to be fantastic at pattern recognition and re-combination, but seem to also have no grasp of the content of statements.
110
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 21h
I think what most skeptics, or at least thoughtful ones, are saying is that we're still a ways away from the fuzzy middle. And that's because the structural mechanisms of LLMs don't seem to be the right sort for consciousness.
120
Steven Palmer Peterson @stevenppeterson.bsky.social · 21h
This is a pretty sad counterexample. And nobody will come up with a definition of consciousness. There's going to be a non exhaustive list of key components and there's going to be a fuzzy middle because the world operates in continuous functions.

That a 13-YEAR-OLD had to do their goddamn police work for them!! And the other bit where they find two-thirds of accusers are bullied into recanting...

2 paragraphs later:
In 2008, after an 11-year-old girl in Washington, DC, twice reported being sexually assaulted, she was charged with making a false report. But, as a Washington Post investigation detailed, detectives didn’t follow basic guidelines for how to treat victims of sexual assault. They lied to her, saying there was evidence contradicting her account, despite two medical reports confirming that she suffered genital injuries. Still, police and prosecutors wanted her punished for fabricating her report. After a plea deal, she was taken in as a ward of the District of Columbia, and spent more than two years in residential mental health facilities.

Through dozens of freedom of information requests, we amassed a first-of-its-kind trove of audio and video evidence documenting the police practice of criminalizing those who report sexual assault. We found examples of police officers lying, deploying interrogation techniques meant for criminal suspects that, when used on unsuspecting, traumatized people, can undercut their credibility and even cause them to recant. Of 52 cases analyzed closely, nearly two-thirds resulted in the alleged victim recanting. In nine cases, the recantation was the only evidence cited by police.

My friend's parents had green cards but not citizenship for decades. Then Pete Wilson pushed prop 187. They became citizens asap and now California needs a special rule that lets the top two primary vote getters, regardless of party, run in the general because the GOP vaporized itself so hard.

Blatty directed it, which probably helped! He's a pretty philosophical writer and I think people make the mistake of focusing on the horror instead of the philosophy. The first half of Exorcist is devoted to showing modern science failing to cure Regan, thus the mother's desperation.
