A) this is going to backfire and harm players & their families just like the Kraken's attempt three years ago B) this is somehow worse than when the only merch for women was pink and/or bedazzled. How did the league go backwards on this?

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Excellent thread! There *are* rewards for being A Good Guy Who Speaks Up even if they are not immediately obvious or publicly bestowed. First, integrity is its own reward. Maybe you didn’t save the world or change hearts & minds. But if you held the line on not making it worse, that’s something.

I definitely spent too long making these, but I'm excited to use them: name tags for celestial buddies so I can include them in a scaled Solar System walk 🌞🤓
Screenshot of two white pages. The left page has 9 tags outlined, while the right has two oversize and one regular. Each says "my name is planet name, if the Sun is the size of a basketball, then I'm this big:" followed by a circle of the appropriate size. Pluto, Charon, and Comet say "if the Sun is the size of a basketball, then I'm too small to see" plus an extra fact

Fewer, larger grants means narrowing the scope of research to a few pre-selected topics. Fewer, larger grants means wasting talent and having fewer eyes on the problem. Fewer, larger grants means losing steady, reliable progress. Fewer, larger grants means more pressure and more failure.

For the record, "fewer larger grants" is the opposite of how to fund good research. Give a bunch of researchers financial stability and basic funding, without wasting their time on increasingly competitive applications and widening the have/have-not gap, and look how far we'll go.

Getting a little nervous watching the AOC/MAHA backlash swing into "we must always trust the medical system" territory. Especially coming from folks who have never had to ask the medical system to give a shit about their ovaries being covered in cysts or endo scarring eating their intestines.

Good job, Seattle Times Editorial Board. Excluding trans girls from sports (or telling them they have to play with boys, which is the same thing) is ritual humiliation. www.seattletimes.com/opinion/edit...
IL 26-638 would send Washington back to the days of “femininity certificates,” when amateur women athletes, including Olympic athletes, had to carry proof that they had passed visual exams and chromosome testing that proved they were women. Under this proposed initiative, parents of girls as young as 12 could be subject to this violation of privacy.

The ballot initiative states that athletes “must provide, as part of the required routine sports physical examination, a health examination and consent form or other statement signed by the student’s personal healthcare provider that verifies the student’s biological sex, relying only on one or more of the following: The student’s reproductive anatomy, genetic makeup, or normal endogenously produced testosterone levels.”

Aside from the humiliation and violation of privacy, testing for genes and hormones isn’t cheap, which would keep girls without means out of competitive sports.

Did you know that even prompting an LLM to edit your grammar might alter the semantic meaning of your text and remove your human voice? If you're in Bergen on Friday September 4 you can hear Isadora White and Marwa Abdulhai present their recent paper on this. They took human-written short essays, asked LLMs to revise them and found significant changes well beyond just copyediting. This is a large-scale computational study, but the image shared here shows two examples of how this happens.

We'll also have talks by John Gallagher, whose newsletter on AI and writing I read religiously, and by Rashid Mustafin, a PhD student at NHH, and Pedro Jacobetty. And before these public talks the AI STORIES team gets to spend two days in a workshop with these and other brilliant people - I'm so excited!

we should remember that vocabulary control is a tried-and-true cult indoctrination technique — both as a way to divide members from outsiders and to demonstrate the cults' power over their members' reality — and insistence on using farcical "Lake America" type names should be seen in that light.
