Chris Mihos @chrismihos.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Ahh, I'm seeing a lot of particle physicists riding into astronomy research, ready fix our field and solve all our science questions for us. I mean, how hard can astronomy be, right? Welcome in, dear. 1512817 128
Mike Boylan-Kolchin @mbkplus.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Any specific case you’re thinking of here (and can say on Bluesky)? 100 1
Chris Mihos @chrismihos.bsky.social · 30/08/2026I remember when the BICEP-2 results came out and physicists were celebrating the detection of primordial grav waves. I said to a physicist "but are we really sure the Milky Way dust correction is legit" and he immediately started yelling at me that astronomers were just jealous of the result. 0320 32
QuixoticMage @quixoticmage.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Would love to see this in reverse. "Atoms are basically just small accretion disks, so particle physics is just an edge case of astrophysics " 120 2
Derek Fox @partialobserver.bsky.social · 30/08/2026So many physicists were soooooo sure that Ray Davis didn’t know how to count neutrinos and John Bahcall was understating his uncertainties in how the Sun shone… 100 1
Manuel Royal @manuel-royal.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Reminds me of when the character Sheldon Cooper was often full of shit when talking outside his field. (Though I don't think the show's writers quite understood that.) 000 0
Ben Monreal @benmonreal.bsky.social · 30/08/2026I dunno: as an astro-nosing-in hep-ex student at MIT, I vividly remember Paul Schechter saying this in ~2001 (complaining about SNAP at LBL). It didn't make me stop nosing into astro---it's too interesting not to. (It did make me focus on listening, harder than Paul would have credited me with.) 000 0
Eugene Lim @tukohbin.bsky.social · 30/08/2026A mentor once told me (when the INTEGRAL results came out) that “dark matter is sexy, astrophysics is messy and hence the number of papers claiming DM detection is 2 orders of magnitude bigger than that of people trying to explain it with pulsars.” 010 1
Rod Van Meter @rdvquantum.bsky.social · 30/08/2026xkcd.com/793 At least physicists are vaguely aware that astronomy is a field. Most physicists have heard of computer science but are largely ignorant of computer engineering, to the point that they're often unaware we have ideas that might help.xkcd.comPhysicists 290 9
Jerome Moore @robotnose.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Good luck from materials chemistry. I learned to calm myself when I heard confident "advice" from HEP people, usually starting with "you simply have to..." or "all we need to do is...". Some would not be swayed by argument or literature describing the solved problem from 50 years ago. 010 1
Burnished rows of steel @acreed.bsky.social · 30/08/2026My brother-in-Christ, let me tell you about numerical diffusion in climate modeling, let alone “why don’t you just solve the Navier-Stokes equation”. 030 3
