David Brooks isn’t stupid. He watches politics for a living. He sees his party embracing white nationalism with both arms. But instead of doing something, he’s offended by what you call them because he knows it reflects directly on how he’s wasted his career defending wannabe klansmen.

BTW, the reason these guys get so offended when Trump etc is accurately called a racist/rapist/criminal is because they knew all of this and voted for him anyway. They know where the party they spent their lives defending is now and they’re afraid of how it reflects on them. That’s the whole thing.

It’s cool, and not incredibly demoralizing, that the last ~25 years (? more?) have been an increasingly flagrant demonstration that The Rules, as we were brought up to understand them, just do not apply to a lot of people

The RFKJr emphasis on medical nutrition edu -> now influencer MDs cosplaying harder than ever that they're nutrition experts pipeline is noticeable. Physicians have always been intrigued by the social capital they can get from nutrition(w little interest in the data) but I fear its set to get worse.

the endgame is probably some of the gulf states, where much of the population aren't citizens but there are guest workers of (often wildly varying) levels of income and treatment. some of them will be quite happy, all of them will be precarious, none of them will be able to vote.

Your typical nativist is *just* smart enough to realize that the government is never going to let them fulfill their dream of being a slaveowner and the Gulf State model is their favorite among the alternatives they think they can actually get.

Every single post boldly proclaiming what the Democrats “must” do when back in power – impeach and imprison Trump, break Musk’s empire, SCOTUS expansion, etc – is both correct and also pointless mental masturbation. They won’t do any of those things.

To expand on this: Bigotry isn't a result of an innocent misunderstanding, or not having all the facts. It's not a choice made rationally, defeated with a rational argument. Bigotry is a self-protective, foundational belief used to help make the world make sense to them. Debate won't change that.

“A lot of them don’t believe that their fight is partisan, and it’s not.” Yes it is. MAHA is overwhelmingly a right-wing movement with right-wing goals. The reason they make “progressive” arguments is to trick mainstream figures into working with them — exactly as AOC seems to be doing.

Vaccine conspiracism is overwhelmingly clustered among the religious, white and affluent. It’s a function of conservative ideology and bad faith media. Being nicer to MAHA types will not ‘bring them into the fold,’ it will only increase their sense of entitlement.
Objective: Strengthening of antivaccination movements in recent decades has coincided with unprecedented increases in the incidence of some communicable diseases. Many intervention programs work from a deficit model of science communication, presuming that vaccination skeptics lack the ability to access or understand evidence. However, interventions focusing on evidence and the debunking of vaccine-related myths have proven to be either nonproductive or counterproductive. Working from a motivated reasoning perspective, we examine the psychological factors that might motivate people to reject scientific consensus around vaccination. To assist with international generalizability, we examine this question in 24 countries. Methods: We sampled 5,323 participants in 24 countries, and measured their antivaccination attitudes. We also measured their belief in conspiracy theories, reactance (the tendency for people to have a low tolerance for impingements on their freedoms), disgust sensitivity toward blood and needles, and individualistic/hierarchical worldviews (i.e., people's beliefs about how much control soci hould have over individuals, and whether hierarchies are desirable). Results: In
order of magnitude,
antivaccination attitudes were highest among those who (a) were high in conspir-
atorial thinking, (b) were high in reactance, (c) reported high levels of disgust toward blood and needles, and (d) had strong individualistic/hierarchical worldviews
. In contrast, demographic variables (including
education) accounted for nonsignificant or trivial lev
f variance. Conclusions: These data help
identify the "attitude roots" that may motivate and sustain vaccine skepticism. In so doing, they help shed light on why repetition of evidence can be nonproductive, and suggest communication solutions to that problem.
Keywords: vaccination, conspiracy beliefs, health communication,

I know this is a common belief, but it’s not true. If people went anti-vaxx/MAHA because they were excluded from the medical establishment, we would see sky-high rates among poor people, minorities and the uninsured. We don’t.

In the american context communism is mostly unrelated to economics. Any progressive redistributive policy is communism, as is any egalitarianism of race, gender, or sexual orientation. Integration is communism, women in the workplace is communism, marriage equality is communism. It's deeply stupid.

Chauvin was, in fact, the cause of Floyd’s death. He used a technique that MPD and most other agencies have banned, specifically because it causes death. And the crime for which he was convicted is unintentional second-degree murder, which by definition does not require intent to kill.
