Talk about hydroclimate whiplash - Amarillo has had more rain in the last week than all of December 2025 - August 2026 combined. This will also be the city’s wettest September on record. Weekly totals are over 9” in parts of the panhandle, and it’s still raining.
West Texas mesonet showing weekly rainfall totals ranging from a few hundredths of an inch in central Texas to over 9” southwest of amarilllo.

When I don't write down review solicitations that I accept and end up committing to more than I want because I've forgotten what I've already agreed to... Glad I turned down two other requests last week!

OKC reached 106 (!) degrees today, beating the previous record high by 4 degrees; today was 21 degrees above normal! More than a few mesonet sites hit 108, and Grandfield got to 109. Both LAW and SPS set new record highs at 108 degrees. Pretty exceptional heat for mid September! #okwx

Another day of record heat across the area. Previous record high for OKC today was 102 set in 1930. The 2pm temp is 103. Temps before 3pm are approaching 110 degrees in southwestern Oklahoma. As a reminder, it's mid-September. Gross.

Another brutally hot day (at least in southern and central OK). OKC airport tied record high of 108 (from 2011). It was even hotter just southwest of the city -- Chickasha mesonet hit 113, which would tie OKC's all-time high temp. Very hot weather the past 4+ weeks (2nd img from my back yard). Yuck

Very hot day for much of Oklahoma (and elsewhere). Max temp in my backyard was 109.9 F. The OKC airport topped out at 109, beating the previous daily record high of 104. Beating a record high by 5 degrees is pretty impressive! Kingfisher mesonet site got to 112. Another very hot day tomorrow! #okwx

August 10th, 2020: One of the worst derechos in US history ravaged the Midwest. The MCS carved a path from eastern Nebraska to Michigan over the course of ~11 hours. Winds as high as 140 mph produced substantial crop and structural damage throughout Iowa and Illinois.

After an obscure defense vendor won a $12 million no-bid contract w/ ICE, I noticed something odd on its website: The firm was using a (still watermarked!) stock photo for the chief of its “development team.” Things only got more bizarre from there…

The upper level low/trough driving severe weather in the central US today is being poorly sampled by the (weather balloon) sounding network. We get lots of data from satellites & airplanes, but radiosonde data serve an important observational role, and errors in analysis reduce forecast accuracy.1/2

It's not as anomalous as many other locales in the west have seen in past few days but still disconcerting to see the first 100.0 degree reading in my backyard in central Oklahoma considering it's only March 21st. At least the dewpoint isn't high, though that's increasing fire danger, so... #okwx

The area in a winter storm warning is remarkable; the size of the area that'll see warning-level winter wx (e.g., heavy snow, sleet, and/or freezing rain) is astonishing. As much as snow, sleet, and freezing rain will cause massive disruption (travel, power, etc.), the SIZE of this is just as wild.
