When I don't write down review solicitations that I accept and end up committing to more than I want because I've forgotten what I've already agreed to... Glad I turned down two other requests last week!

My house... Technically a trace since we have a few sprinkles but couldn't even make them out on the ground. The ground at the State Fair got wet though.

OKC reached 106 (!) degrees today, beating the previous record high by 4 degrees; today was 21 degrees above normal! More than a few mesonet sites hit 108, and Grandfield got to 109. Both LAW and SPS set new record highs at 108 degrees. Pretty exceptional heat for mid September! #okwx

Another day of record heat across the area. Previous record high for OKC today was 102 set in 1930. The 2pm temp is 103. Temps before 3pm are approaching 110 degrees in southwestern Oklahoma. As a reminder, it's mid-September. Gross.

Another brutally hot day (at least in southern and central OK). OKC airport tied record high of 108 (from 2011). It was even hotter just southwest of the city -- Chickasha mesonet hit 113, which would tie OKC's all-time high temp. Very hot weather the past 4+ weeks (2nd img from my back yard). Yuck

Going through dusty boxes tucked away in a closet to declutter and ran across these bad boys. Spent a lot of time in middle and high school watching these tapes...

Very hot day for much of Oklahoma (and elsewhere). Max temp in my backyard was 109.9 F. The OKC airport topped out at 109, beating the previous daily record high of 104. Beating a record high by 5 degrees is pretty impressive! Kingfisher mesonet site got to 112. Another very hot day tomorrow! #okwx

We probably took our pictures within less than a minute of each other. Wild. Not 100% sure the GPS location was updating but the time should be right obviously

Late season supercells in central Oklahoma less than a week before July. Weather the past few months here has been quite wonky.

The upper level low/trough driving severe weather in the central US today is being poorly sampled by the (weather balloon) sounding network. We get lots of data from satellites & airplanes, but radiosonde data serve an important observational role, and errors in analysis reduce forecast accuracy.1/2

It's not as anomalous as many other locales in the west have seen in past few days but still disconcerting to see the first 100.0 degree reading in my backyard in central Oklahoma considering it's only March 21st. At least the dewpoint isn't high, though that's increasing fire danger, so... #okwx

Impromptu chase with my oldest this evening after middle child's extracurricular. Got a great view to the west towards dusk from the Kickapoo TP (335) N of Harrah. Lots of outflow (persistent, huge area of outflow on radar and visually) save for a few minutes of a beefy bowl lowering.

Here's Guthrie @mesonet.org meteogram w/ similar pattern. Wind shift around 11 pm, temp and dew point dropped about 20 minutes later (Td plummeted into the 30s), and not long after Td rose a bit while temp took another leg down. Similar trend at Yukon. That's just my interpretation though!

SRHelicity @srhelicity.bsky.social · 07/03/2026
The leading fine line is a wind shift. A 2nd, diffuse fine line is associated w/ drop in dewpoint and modest drop in T. IMO 3rd fine line behind the precip is main front associated with stronger winds and much cooler air. From my back yard - 1st passes around 11:50 pm, second around 12:20 am.

Ongoing tornado passing less than 3 miles S/E of KVNX. Somewhat complicated evolution with a cell merger ongoing as small cells develop south of the nature supercell and move into it. #okwx

Several large wildfires occurring today in the central US, where very windy (with wind advisories and high wind warnings in place as gusts over 65 mph are being measured) and very warm conditions (temps in the 70s and 80s) are occurring.

Went to Tinker on Sunday because I got word that there were F15s and F35s departing later that day. Winds were light from the NE, so went to N end. After ~2 hr wait, the 4 F15s ended up taking off Sbound as winds slowly shifted to E. Did get S to see 4 F35s depart (and an E6B doing patterns) tho.

The area in a winter storm warning is remarkable; the size of the area that'll see warning-level winter wx (e.g., heavy snow, sleet, and/or freezing rain) is astonishing. As much as snow, sleet, and freezing rain will cause massive disruption (travel, power, etc.), the SIZE of this is just as wild.

Is this a TBSS on volcanic ash/steam/lava? It looks like it, but I don't have a lot of familiarity with radar data of Kilauea

This was that same tornado a little later than that pic. As a new chaser at the time watching my 1st tor, I was quite confused by the structure of the tornado/storm, but I'm glad it was unique. I don't think it even had much of an anvil at this time - def look like cumulonimbus calvus IIRC.

OK, this is totally inconsequential, but that second image (which was actually the first tornado) should be this one (which is still potato quality, but not quite as bad!). Had to explain to my oldest that this was the best that 8 mm camcorders could do...

I'm pretty sure I've digitized it, but I can't find it. I have some video stills from it, though that's not what you're asking. I pulled my site down yrs ago, but here's a Wayback Machine view: web.archive.org/web/20130607... . It didn't archive the specific page for the 8/9/1999. I'll keep looking!

Been there, done that, unfortunately... 👎 Mine was a trim nail (missed the stud) through a pex line that went undetected until the nail rusted enough for the water leak to saturate the adjacent carpet and pad, which took about 7 years.

An absolutely A+ weather day here in Oklahoma! Temps near 70, dewpoints in the low 50s, light winds, under partly cloudy skies... Considering we are still in early September (!!), I don't think the weather can get much more pleasant than we are seeing today!

An 80 deg dewpoint in my yard this afternoon with a temp in the mid-90s makes for gross conditions. I live in a ~40 yr old neighborhood w/ many mature trees (lots of vegetation & less mixing), so the daytime Td tends to be several deg higher than nearby mesonet sites with more open exposure. Yuck.

My tipping gauge is at 3.50" now, while my Climalytic CoCoRaHS gauge is ~3.95". Radar estimate at my place is very near 3.75", which is a good match with my gauges. Other areas of the N and W metro have seen >5". (In attached radar image, magenta starts near 4.25" and purple/blue near 5.5"!) #okwx

Very heavy rain across the northern and western OKC metro. Peak rainrate at my house has been above 3"/hr. I've gotten nearly 2" (reasonably close to radar estimate), and the rainrate is still >2"/hr here.

I think it's important that people realize that line items like "Tornado Severe Storm Research / Phased Array Radar" (6 FTEs) and "US Weather Research Program" are very small (17 FTEs). The vast, *vast* majority of tornado, severe storm, radar, & weather research occurs at the labs and CIs.
