October 10, 1974: A significant tornado hit the village of Cañoncito in New Mexico's Tohajiilee Indian Reservation. The brief F2 damaged 10 homes and destroyed three trailers. Tragically, an infant was killed and eight people were injured.

October 10, 2021: An outbreak of two dozen tornadoes affected Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota, and Ontario. The most intriguing aspect of the event was an unusually far-north EF2 that downed countless trees in the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area. No injuries occurred.

San Diego, CA under a tropical storm watch for Tropical Storm Rachel. San Diego also was affected by the 1939 Long Beach tropical storm after an intense heat wave, though on the periphery.

October 9, 1997: Hurricane Pauline made landfall near Puerto Ảngel in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The storm dropped over 2 feet of rain in some locations, causing substantial flash floodings and widespread mudslides. 230-500 people were killed.

October 9, 1914: An outbreak of eight significant (F2+) tornadoes affected southeast Kansas and northeast Oklahoma. Two of the twisters, one near Fredonia, KS, and the other north of Miami, OK, were violent F4s. At least 11 people were killed and ≥47 were injured.

October 9th, 2024: After its third Category 5 peak, a weakening Hurricane Milton made landfall at Siesta Key, Florida, as a Category 3. Up to 20.40" of rain fell in the state. The storm produced ≥$34.3 billion in the US and was responsible for 12 direct fatalities.

October 8th, 1919: An intense, estimated F4 tornado moved through the town of Hoisington, 11 miles north of Great Bend, Kansas. It damaged or destroyed 60 homes, which resulted in $200,000 in damages. Business papers and canceled checks were found at Lincoln, 55 miles to the northeast.

October 7th, 2018: A depression near the Yucatan Peninsula was upgraded to a tropical storm and given the name "Michael." The storm would eventually make landfall in Florida three days later as a devastating Category 5 hurricane.

October 6th, 2016: An outbreak of 13 tornadoes impacted Kansas, Iowa, and Illinois. Two of the twisters in Saline County, Kansas, were significant. The stronger of the pair was an EF3 that obliterated a mobile home, tossed vehicles, and shredded trees. No injuries were confirmed.

October 5th, 1864: A devastating cyclone impacted Calcutta, India. The storm caused over 60,000 fatalities, most of which came from ships lost at sea and drownings when entire villages were devastated by surge.

October 3-4, 2024: Hurricane Kirk peaked as a Category 4 in the open Atlantic. The storm's maximum intensity during this peroid featured 1-minute sustainted winds of 130 kts and a minimum central pressure of 928 mbar. Kirk was the third Atlantic Category 4+ of 2024.

October 4th, 2013: An outbreak of 18 tornadoes struck Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Five were significant (EF2+), a pair of which were rated EF4. The first was a monstrous 1.38 mile-wide wedge that grazed Wayne, Nebraska. The other destroyed numerous structures near Moville & Pierson, Iowa.

October 3, 1979: A violent tornado tore through Windsor Locks, Connecticut. The F4 damaged or destroyed around 100 residences, an air museum, and numerous other structures. 3 people were killed and ~500 were injured.

October 2nd, 2018: Twenty-two tornadoes impacted the Northeast. Four twisters were rated EF2, though none were long-lived or deadly. This event was both Pennsylvania's largest October outbreak and one of the state's largest single-day outbreaks in general.

October 1st, 2018: Two Category 5 tropical cyclones – Super Typhoon Kong-rey and Hurricane Walaka – were at peak strength in the Pacific Ocean. Before these two storms, the last time a pair of Category 5s existed simultaneously in the Northern Hemisphere was in 2005.

October 1–2, 1893: On these two days in 1893, a catastrophic hurricane wiped out the coastal village of Cheniere Caminada. A surge up to 18 feet swept across the island, destroying nearly every structure and taking more than half the community’s population. The town was never rebuilt.

September 30th, 1989: Hurricane Raymond reached its peak intensity as a 145 mph, 935 millibar Category 4 in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The storm was the strongest tropical cyclone in the EPAC during 1989.

Ten years ago today (eastern time): Hurricane Matthew reaches Category 5 intensity, the first to do so since Felix (2007). Matthew caused devastation across the Caribbean, esp. in Haiti, where over 500-1000 people were killed and cholera cases spiked across the impoverished southern region.

September 29th, 1927: An outbreak of tornadoes from Oklahoma to Indiana killed 81 people and caused $25 million in damage. A tornado, possibly two, cut an eight-mile-long path across St Louis, Missouri, to Granite City, Illinois, killing 79. Some images of St. Louis are courtesy of the MWR.

September 28th, 1998: Hurricane Georges made a final landfall in Mississippi as a Category 2. The storm brought a massive storm surge, wind gusts over 100 mph, extreme rainfall, major beach erosion, and four dozen tornadoes to the Southeast. Four people were killed.

September 28th, 2022: Hurricane Ian reached Category 5 intensity in the Gulf of Mexico before making a catastrophic landfall in Florida as a high-end Category 4 during the afternoon. The storm killed 149 people and produced around $109.5 billion in damage in the state.

September 27, 1985: Hurricane Gloria impacted the East Coast. In the early morning, the storm struck NC as a Category 2 before moving into New England. >4 million people were left without power, around $900 million in damage was produced, and 14 people were killed.

September 26th, 1898: A tornado, likely a family, moved southeast from St. Catherine's, Ontario, to the north of Alden, New York. Six people were killed, and at least 50 others were injured along the ~45-mile path. At Merritton, ON, 12 homes, a school, and a paper mill were destroyed.

September 25, 2015: A significant tornado struck Johns Island, South Carolina during the early morning. 51 structures were impacted, including 33 that were severely damaged or destroyed. Thousands of trees were snapped or uprooted. No casualties were reported.

September 24th, 1986: A rare F2 tornado struck southeast of Vina, California. A mobile home was destroyed, injuring a 22-year-old occupant. Eleven other buildings were damaged or demolished, and 50 acres of walnut orchards were flattened.

September 24, 2005 Hurricane Rita made landfall in southwest Louisiana. The Category 3 devastated several coastal parishes, with the worst damage seen in Cameron where >90% of several communities were swept away. At least 120 fatalities were associated with Rita.

I had mentioned that I have some suspected strong Nor'easters in September for the Northeast USA in my earlier records. This is one of them, from the NY Daily Advertiser, around September 20-23, 1819.  I have instrumental records that demonstrate the storm was not tropical, and it lasted too long.

September 23rd, 2020: Hurricane Teddy made landfall in Nova Scotia as a powerful extratropical cyclone. The storm dropped up to 5.2" of rain, produced wind gusts as high as 82 mph, and cut power to ~20,000 customers in the province.

September 22, 2001: A massive tornado struck near Edgar, Nebraska. The F3 was on the ground for around 30 minutes, tracking for 10 miles and reaching a width of 1,250 yards. Fourteen irrigation pivots, 15 grain bins, and two farmsteads were damaged or destroyed.

September 21, 2010: Hurricane Igor affected Newfoundland as an extratropical cyclone. The storm brought up 9.37" of rain to the island, resulting in substantial flash flooding. Numerous roadways, bridges, and rail lines were washed away. One person was killed.

September 20, 2018: A line of severe thunderstorms produced 29 tornadoes in the Upper Midwest. Two of the twisters were rated EF2, one of which destroyed homes in Morristown and the other flattened structures at an airport near Faribault. One person was injured.

September 20th, 2017: Hurricane Maria made a devastating landfall on Puerto Rico. Thousands of structures were destroyed, forests were shredded, and communications & power infrastructure were obliterated. Maria took the lives of at least 2,900 people on the island.

September 19th, 1974: Hurricane Fifi made landfall in Belize as a Category 2. The storm's worst effects were in Honduras, where tens of thousands of structures were destroyed by extreme flash flooding and widespread mudslides. At least 8,200 people were killed.

I built a statistical model to forecast ski conditions using seasonal climate models. Summit at Snoqualmie in Washington has the worst ski forecast in the western US this winter. Makes sense given the “El Niño on steroids” model signal. Go south for better skiing ⛷️ Try it out: where2.ski

September 18, 1997: A localized outbreak of five tornadoes affected central Minnesota. Three of the tornadoes were significant (F2+), the strongest of which was an intense F3 that struck near Onamia, Minnesota. One person was killed and another was injured.

September 18-19, 2022: Hurricane Fiona made landfalls in Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. Extreme rainfall totals in Puerto Rico led to the territory's worst flooding since Maria. The storm killed 25 people and caused and nearly $3 billion in damage on the two islands.
