“More than any other digital service, my email is a window into my brain. Now Meta has it. If that's not enough, Muse also suggested I give it my bank accounts. No thanks. I didn't let the AI run wild on my computer hard drive, either.”

'Things may get ugly': Meta's new AI Muse is about to make the internet more annoying
Someday we'll redesign the internet for tools like this. Until then, you're in for a wild ride.

Sounds great.
According to experts I interviewed, the internet is about to get more frustrating. These agents may cause a cascading chain of problems that shake the foundations of digital infrastructure. Chances are good that you're about to live through an era of online chaos.
The internet was built for humans with limited time and patience. AIs don't have those restraints. You'll probably have to fight with robots over concert tickets and booking appointments. Small businesses could drown in machine-made pestering. AIs don't look at ads, and websites that rely on them are already crumbling. You'll be buried in endless loops of proving you're human. And if you use these AI tools, some may betray you.

There is a lot of overlap between the people trying to rationalize/justify/deny the genocide in Gaza and transphobes who want to see trans people harmed or openly tell us to support the transphobe candidate for “the greater good”. In fact, the Venn diagram is pretty much just a single circle.

What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

That's where I've been for a while. We can't even reach questions about the death penalty itself because we fail essential predicates such as "fair and consistent criminal justice system" and "reliable death penalty verdicts that leave no reasonable doubt" and, as shown tonight, "humane execution."

"The Sages said: Let him die."
Screenshot: Miriam Anzovin

Sanhedrin 75: A man set his eyes upon a certain woman and passion rose in his heart, to the point that he became deathly ill. The doctors said: He will have no cure until he has sex with her.

The Sages said: Let him die.

The doctors said: She should at least stand naked before him.

The Sages said: Let him die.

The doctors suggested: The woman should at least converse with him behind a fence in a secluded area, so that he should derive a small amount of pleasure from the encounter.

The Sages insisted: Let him die.

What kind of scandal will it take to lead to the widespread elimination of Greek fraternities? Hazing so severe it results in serious maiming or death? It's happened. Absolutely hideous sexual assaults? It's happened. Terroristic actions in pursuit of campus political power? It's happened!

Covid damage is cumulative. The part that “feels like a cold or flu” isn’t the long term damage, and every time you allow your body to catch covid it piles more on the “maybe long covid will take effect this time” load. I think most people don’t know they already have long covid.

The perfect way to put it. They found a way to worm a subscription between you and your normal work.
A screenshot of a post on Threads by Joe Hill. The post reads: "Here’s a thought about the purveyors of AI. They aren’t selling assistance—they’re selling dependency. You give up on acquiring one skill after another, give up on the knotty, meaningful struggle to acquire those skills and AI takes over. It isn’t freeing up time so you can make more of yourself. It’s encouraging cognitive surrender so you can be less."

, this is Bluesky’s Trust & Safety team. We’re working on updates to account-level adult content labels, including a way for creators to label their own accounts. These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to keeping adult content out of reach for minors on Bluesky, while making sure creators like you can continue sharing your work with the audiences it’s meant for. We’re reaching out directly because these changes may affect you as a creator.

It feels genuinely ridiculous having to say this, but the point of art is to connect with another human. Someone thought of that painting or melodic line or scene or paragraph that is suddenly making you weep, and that means that they saw you and understood you without even meeting you.
