It's unreal how poorly California is governed relative to the size of our economy. We're going to tear out the copper wire on train service for a region of about 20 million people because our extremely dumb state thinks that Orange County Republicans should be able to veto mass transit for everyone.

I think it's worth pointing out that writing software is only part of a software engineers job. Likewise if code review is getting bogged down this bad, either you have broken CI/CD processes or you are submitting bad code changes, which is like the tell tale sign of a less skilled engineer

Given how much Los Angeles' terrible governance on housing and homeless affects the rest of the state, it's no exaggeration to call the LA Mayor's race the most important election in California this cycle.

If you ask the average person if they could have a painting of anything what would they want they'd say their family or dog or some shit. AI could detect you want the challenge though and if it's good enough can deliver. It also sounds like the very concept is challenging you so it's like meta.

it’s worth noting that Zohran has made major policy reforms to legalize development of more market rate housing. On the other hand, New York republicans are super NIMBY and want the government to regulate new housing out of existence with excessive red tape
What's one issue in politics that you've changed your mind about?
The role of the private market in housing construction.
How so?
I clearly recognize now that there is a very important role to be played, and one that city government must facilitate through the increasing of density around mass transit hubs, the ending of the requirement to build parking lots, as well as the need to up-zone neighborhoods that have historically not contributed to affordable housing production - namely, wealthier neighborhoods.
I think all these things, in tandem with a muscular role for the public sector. But that is a changing opinion over time that I've been in office.

A timeline for a project to install bus lanes and protected bike lanes on Lafayette Ave and Dekalb in Brooklyn, NY. The timeline notes that construction will be started and completed within Fall 2026.

Japan gets around this by allowing renters to sue their landlords if a rent increase doesn't match market expectations.

It's either that or what is essentially a tax on other renters for making the mistake of not moving to said city first. You are not explicitly helping the poor under this regime only those that lived somewhere first.

Like wealthy renters taking advantage of it could move while the poor are fucking stuck. Instead of a policy essentially grounded in nativism as its intellectual argument, you should just just give cash directly to poor households or something similar, as much as I hate means tested policy

Rent control fundamentally removes the agency of the poor while forcing what is fundamentally ineffective neoliberal social policy onto business owners and other renters via extremely poorly targetted policy. The people I've seen take the most advantage of it have usually been more wealthy than me.
