And yet, here we are. I like data and technology, and therefore people and policy. Also unfunny jokes and mild snark. A bit of a political junkie, I’m afraid. Trying to let that go. Slightly American (or slightly British?). He/him. 📍United Kingdom

This notion of bigoted beliefs being a protected characteristic like gender or race is just absolutely barmy. Those of us who’ve experienced genuine discrimination for who we are know there’s no comparison, and the political and legal collusion on this stuff is disastrous.

This one raises a fascinating philosophical question: if you list your flat for £200k more than it is worth, have you really listed it, or are you just posting pictures of your home's interior online?
Georgia Dean and her husband recently took their property off the market.

He bought the two-bedroom flat in Haggerston, east London, for £470,000 in 2014. But the mortgage rate was due to rise from 1.6 per cent to 4.8 per cent: renting the flat out no longer made financial sense.

They listed it in June for £650,000, a below-inflation increase. An estate agent told them “no one would sniff around if the price stayed above £600,000”, said Dean, who works in product at a tech start-up.

In the two months before the couple pulled the listing, it attracted only two viewings.

Some unintended consequences I suspect the rise of AI agents will create: 1. Restaurants that only take reservations by hand written letter, or more likely, don't take them at all. 2. Gigs where you can only buy tickets in person. 3. Businesses that operate without websites.

A reminder about the tens of thousands of PA-registered vehicles in our city: as woefully insufficient as NYSDMV liability minimums are, PA’s are even worse. A car with PA plates is likely effectively uninsured—give them a wide berth and if you own a car, max out your un-/underinsured coverage

A minimal silhouette of two layers of dark, distant hills of various height rising and falling across the top of a loch, down to the loch level. The sun has set. It's 'blue hour'. A bright orange/yellow band lies just above the hills, which is reflected in the still waters of the loch, which fills all of the foreground.

Feels like a life lesson. Confronted with the imminent catastrophe of the First World War, with Britain's decision to go to war hanging in the balance, Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey decided to go and spend a few hours of his working day looking at the birds at London Zoo.
In the interval Grey saw Cambon and gave him the assurances about the Channel. The Frenchman was not mollified. German troops had by this time been reported in Luxembourg and he asked for the immediate despatch of the BEF. Grey refused. The whole matter of British policy was still under discussion in the Cabinet. Furthermore the 'great catastrophe' playing out in Europe was so dire that troops must be kept at home to protect the coasts. Cambon asked if that meant Britain would never send a force to France. Grey replied that his statement only applied to the present moment. He then left for a quiet couple of hours communing with the birds at the zoo.
