This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD: sheets.works/data-viz/hol...
an XKCD comic showing a precariously assembled tower of blocks. much is labelled "all modern digital infrastructure." a thin leg down at the bottom is labelled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003."

Well, if it’s 23 September... YES, THAT’S RIGHT! It’s the 72nd anniversary of the hunt for the Gorbals Vampire, in which hundreds of children aged from four to 14, armed with dogs, knives, and sharpened sticks went looking for an urban myth
Daily Mirror front page shows grainy image of horde of children in a cemetery, and the headline “Amazing scene as hundreds of children rush cemetery”

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

Mulligrubs [MUL-ih-grubz] (plural noun) 1. A fit of melancholy, gloom, peevishness, or ill humor; also, sulky or ill-tempered persons. 2. A bout of stomach or intestinal distress, especially colic or diarrhoea.
A “Grandiloquent Word of the Day” meme for "Mulligrubs" defined as: 1. A fit of melancholy, gloom, peevishness, or ill humor; also, sulky or ill-tempered persons. 2. A bout of stomach or intestinal distress, especially colic or diarrhoea. At right, a Victorian black-and-white engraving shows a dejected, unshaven man slumped on a bench with his chin in his hand. Example sentence: “Stricken by a debilitating bout of the mulligrubs, I find myself wholly unequal to the demands of gainful employment and shall consequently spend the day snerdling beneath the covers with a good book and an insalubrious quantity of emotional-support chocolate.”
