In many ways Mark Carney is proving to be an excellent Prime Minister for Canada at a critical time in our nation’s history. But he also might be the smartest man in the world to act really stupidly about #ClimateChange at a critical time in world history.

I won’t belabour this because I’ve written about it before, but the part of Carney’s pipeline pivot that I find impossible to justify is the government taking on the demand risk.

Another factor: Republicans favoring negative freedoms (“Nobody tells me what to do”) over positive ones (“I can pursue the life I desire)”), to borrow Isaiah Berlin’s terms. Think of loud cars. The right often sees them as a personal choice; the left as an audible assault. Check out USDOT's Duffy

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

870 French households are disconnecting from the gas grid everyday. At the current rate the gas grid will be completely abandoned in 38 years. But the rate will increase. France is entering the gas grid doom loop.

From my own personal, admittedly anecdotal experience, this rings very true. Second-hand EVs - even with 200.000 km mileage - are on sale for more than EUR 10.000. Checking 2nd hand car sites debunks leasing companies claims about poor residual value. Good that @transportenvironment.org dug deeper!

This is so tragic. In 2022, Italian environment minister Cingolani was arguing that we shouldn't go too fast on EVs because the Chinese will continue to buy combustion engine vehicles www.quattroruote.it/news/industr... In 2026, China has 50%+ BEV sales - the EU lags at 20%-27%

The Senate's permitting bill text is up. It's way too big/complex for anyone who didn't have early access to digest today, so beware hot takes, but this bit (p. 54 line 9) is funny: If an agency misses a deadline, the agency head can't travel >25 miles from their desk til the agency submits the doc.

What is parking for?
Slide with text: heading - What is parking for?

Car parking helps accessibility to an area
But only by car: which is spatially and economically very inefficient

Instead aim for multi-modal accessibility
This sometimes means reducing parking

EVs are awesome. I have a Hyundai Ioniq 5, which has a range of 300-350 miles. I charge it at home, which is convenient, and it costs me about $10 to completely recharge the battery. (84 kWh at 12 cents a kWh) Compare that to a similar size gas car, at 25-30 mpg, which would cost $54 to fill up.
