📚✨ In 10 years in libraries, I’ve never seen 300 Norwegian librarians moved like this. Today, @samhelmick.bsky.social did. The fight against book bans is about democracy. We can’t take our values for granted. 📖 #Libraries #FreedomToRead #Democracy

If he's going to get a national profile on the strength of a younger woman's campaign, I'm going to come out and say it: during his short-lived tenure as a math professor, Biss had an inappropriate romantic relationship with one of his undergraduate students. I was that student.

“Social murder” is a term created by Friedrich Engels to describe the premature death of marginalized people due to political, social, or economic oppression. What is happening right now in America is the premeditated, calculated, & planned extermination of children who are trans. This is genocide.

We could do $12,000 every year, or better yet, $1,000 every month (or better yet $1,300/mo per person instead of per household of four). And we could do it for everyone instead of only households under $150,000 in annual income and call it universal basic income instead of direct payments.

Part of the problem here is a long-standing issue of mine: The public gets a huge benefit from beat journalism—but the journalism industry does not, by and large, recognize beat journalism for its value or when it comes to awards and prizes. Those go to investigations and "one big thing" features.

This is anti-vaxx logic. It is not "naive" to accept the conclusions of experts in technical fields.
The science doesn’t seem so settled after all, and it’s important to understand what happened here. The approach of left-of-center Americans and our institutions — to assume that when a scientific organization releases a “policy statement” on a hot-button issue, that the policy statement must be accurate — is a deeply naïve understanding of science, human nature and politics, and how they intersect.

At a time when more and more Americans are turning away from expert authority in favor of YouTube quacks and their ilk — and when our own government is pushing scientifically baseless policies on childhood vaccination and climate change — it’s vital that the organizations that represent mainstream science be open, honest and transparent about politically charged issues. If they aren’t, there’s simply no good reason to trust them.
