Generative AI disclosure statement
It is impossible to write academic text without genAl in 2026. These technologies have unceremoniously crept into virtually every application used for academic reading, writing, and communication today. Rather than disclosing ways we have either purposefully or unwittingly integrated genAl into our writing process, we want to instead disclose why we are the authors of the words and ideas presented in this text.
These words and ideas can be traced directly to the first author's work as a language advisor specializing in genAl since 2023 and as a researcher investigating how genAl affects academic writers and their writing (Olsson 2026;
Gillette, Wackenhut, and Olsson 2026). Beyond this documented work, both authors have read the literature cited throughout the text and developed the text's argument through iterative discussion and revision, from 2024 to publication.
Perhaps more importantly, we have presented drafts of the text to human audiences at conferences and during peer review. Engaging with these social processes helped us transform a writer-centered diatribe into a reader-centered composition we can confidently claim as our own. And, for the record, all punctuation used in this text originates from the authors. Not only do we know the difference between an en-dash and
an em-dash, but we also refuse to surrender our favorite punctuation marks to LLM chatbots.

There are not 700,000 graduates claiming Universal Credit. There are almost certainly not 600,000: and even if they were, it wouldn't mean they are unemployed or in bad jobs. Sorry to see Kemi Badenoch trot out this year-old nonsense. wonkhe.com/wonk-corner/...

Do 600,000 graduates claim Universal Credit and would it matter if they did?
Welcome to silly season.

It's #WorldOctopusDay! Here's an 1861 clipping from the London Illustrated Times of 'A Marine Monster Discovered Near Teneriffe'. From the description, it's likely that this was a giant squid rather than an octopus, but it's described as a 'giant polypus' by the crew.
A clipping from the London Illustrated News of a short article with a large illustration, showing a huge squid-like creature with one massive eye being ensnared by a net and dragged towards a ship. The crew watch on, shocked.

Universities are engines of social mobility. But they must do more to help disadvantaged students. This could be done via clearer contextual admissions, more timely financial support, teaching that recognises work and caring commitments, and stronger routes into employment.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

It’s 170 years since 10,000 people in South Carolina honoured their Congressman with a public dinner. That’s nice, isn’t it? People so rarely respect politicians these days. Unfortunately, they were showing their support for him beating an abolitionist almost to death with his cane
Bizarre monument (in the form of a blue plaque on a post at a street corner), with white text which reads: PRESTON BROOKS DINNER National attention was focused here on Oct. 3, 1856, when some 10,000 people honored Preston S. Brooks, Congressman from this district, with a public dinner in vindication of his assault on Charles Sumner of Massachusetts on the Senate floor for a speech insulting to this state. The Preston Brooks home was five miles south on Highway 246. ERECTED BY NINETY SIX CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
