This is the medical model of disability (which I'm happy to acknowledge is a good model for some disabled people, especially with chronic pain) whereas the social model puts the barriers squarely as a societal issue. In other words, let's remove the barriers to learning and belonging for all kids.

"We need to allow flexible learning schedules and adapt environments for sensory and emotional regulation to allow pockets of flow through the day." How? Because without that, the rest is theory... Where are the case studies? I can't build a DfE SEND and inclusion CPD based on that article...

When I was an infant teacher we'd be desperately asking for support for a child for 3 years, and then it would arrive in the juniors... 🤷

"Let's just be nice to all kids and teach them really well." The naivety in this is so delicious. Jim knows exactly what this means, in his schools. My interpretation 30 to 40 years ago might have led to quite different things going on in my classroom.

Is it because doing a "working class" job left you with the creative capacity, and, with regulated hours, the time to read, paint, garden. Something that teaching, say, sucks from you???

When I started teaching (almost 40 years ago) the Reception teacher had been there for 30 years. "How do you cope teaching the same thing all the time?" I asked. "There's always a child who needs an extra step to learn [perfectly obvious and simple thing]" How do we teach curiosity to teachers?

I hope not. The evidence suggests that grammar schools are antithetical to social mobility. When you create grammars, you create secondary moderns. In Germany, working class and migrant heritage kids overwhelmingly go to Hauptschule. I really hope Labour's ideas don't lead us here in England.

I've been waiting for the DfE to come up with their "curriculum" for the hybrid send and inclusion training starting September 2027, since March... I'm not sure if we're going to be on the right track if this is what they're expecting, but with online (and maybe face to face) sessions too...
