If nothing else AI is making clear that there are people all around us for whom writing, art, and music are not communion with another mind, but just - wallpaper. Just pleasant things to look at. They think AI is conscious because they have no actual grasp of what it is to encounter another mind.

We need to stop accepting AI vendors using the word "misalignment". You keep running software you know has unpredictable behaviour, without monitoring or controls, in a way that could harm others. This isn't "agent was misaligned" - it is (possibly criminal) negligence at this point.

If this was a state actor they’d call it espionage. This is amongst the most sensitive data there is. Instead our governments, universities and institutions are lining up for OpenAI subscriptions - there’s something deeply cooked about that.

Extract from Aaron Swartz's wikipedia page: On January 6, 2011, Swartz was arrested by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) police on state breaking-and-entering charges after connecting a computer to the MIT network in an unmarked and unlocked closet and setting it to download academic journal articles from JSTOR using a guest user account issued to him by MIT.[14][15] Federal prosecutors, led by Carmen Ortiz, charged him with two counts of wire fraud and eleven violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act,[16] carrying a cumulative maximum penalty of $1 million in fines, 35 years in prison, asset forfeiture, restitution, and supervised release.[17] Swartz declined a plea bargain under which he would have served six months in federal prison, but would have been forced to plead guilty to federal felonies.[18] Two days after the prosecution rejected a counter-offer by Swartz, he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment.[19][20] In 2013, Swartz was inducted posthumously into the Internet Hall of Fame.[21]

an amusing juxtaposition in an article about Stewart Lee in the Guardian:
The text reads: It was an inflection point in Lee’s career, just not in the way he’d have planned. “After that, I thought, right, things can get banned. You can be stopped from saying things. So it’s quite important that the things you say are worth saying. I didn’t become Mark Thomas or Lenny Bruce overnight. I did just start to think, there should be something important in this.”

Following this text is an embedded YouTube video but it just says "Video unavailable - It was blocked due to the claimed content by BBC Studios."
