I wrote almost the entirety of the first draft of this book listening to the TAZ Amnesty soundtrack. I've dusted it off for editing draft 10 and am pleased to find that TAZ could still stand for The AmInTheWriting Zone. (Also Interstellar Blues comes at the 30 min mark—good for timing breaks) #taz

I just think it’s hilarious that people went to college with the Pope. “What’s Ken up to these days? Partner at a law firm outside Pittsburgh, that’s nice. And Bob? Oh, he’s the Pope.”

A little more about THE WOLF AND HIS KING, my Bisclavret retelling coming this November from Gollancz. Please enjoy the manicules, I am very pleased with them. Pre-order links here: finnlongman.com/books/the-wo...
The cover of The Wolf and His King by Finn Longman in the centre of a gold square. Around it, in a pseudogothic font, are notes on its contents and themes. Each is pointing to the cover with a pointing finger (a manicule). The text: werewolf knight; the mortifying ordeal of being known; probably too much Latin; 12th century Brittany (sort of); the king's scribe-with-benefits; romance (medieval) with the yearning of romance (modern); period-typical heresy; manuscript production; feelings about fealty; werewolfism as metaphor for chronic illness/pain. At the top it reads "a queer retelling of Bisclavret"; at the bottom, "coming from Gollancz, 27th November 2025".

“That is why I like novels: instead of heroes they have people in them.” Happily revisiting The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction by Ursula K. Le Guin: stillmoving.org/resources/th...
Black text on white background, by Ursula K. Le Guin:

“So the Hero has decreed through his mouthpieces the Lawgivers, first, that the proper shape of the narrative is that of the arrow or spear, starting here and going straight there and THOK! hitting its mark (which drops dead); second, that the central concern of narrative, including the novel, is conflict; and third, that the story isn't any good if he isn't in it.

I differ with all of this. I would go so far as to say that the natural, proper, fitting shape of the novel might be that of a sack, a bag. A book holds words. Words hold things. They bear meanings. A novel is a medicine bundle, holding things in a particular, powerful relation to one another and to us.”

A petite bird rests delicately on a slender green branch, its intricate plumage glowing with warm shades of copper, bronze, and brown. Its long, slender beak is dusted with tiny specks of nectar, a testament to its recent visit to the forest's blooms. The bird's bright, alert eye reflects the soft light, while the blurred background of rich green foliage creates a serene, natural ambiance. This moment captures the delicate charm and quiet resilience of life in the jungle.
