earlier i was trying to work out if my wet beast was a cormorant or a shag so i tried googling "shag uk" and. well. that didn't go well so then i tried "shag birds uk" this was not an improvement.

asking for me but also for a friend. does anyone know any novels set in early modern ireland? (or late medieval ireland?) realised the only ones i've read in this period are the An Litir trilogy but i'm sure there must be some out there in english as well if i could only find them!

in hindsight it was a very savvy decision to go on a fixed term energy thing for the next year but. i have a horrible feeling this means that due to life changes due early next year i'm gonna suddenly have a 75% lower income, drastically higher energy bills, and higher council tax all at once.

the bad news is that my washing machine broke and the good news is that i fixed it and now i feel very grown-up and competent and accomplished even though there's water all over the floor the culprit: the drawstring of my swimming trunks tore off and got stuck in the filter :|

it makes me so mad when books about early modern irish history don't quote or cite a single irish-language source at any point or even mention that irish-language analogues for some of the english things they're talking about exist. especially when they're pretending to care about the irish

This does make it sound like tech firms moved to Ireland and immediately fell foul of a Co. Kildare demon-summoning circle. Or possibly joined one.

for some reason my desktop computer's older version of office has a bunch of weird gaps in its spell check. words it doesn't know, which are accepted in later iterations of Word, include: goosebumps, sigil, Maynooth but at some point after 2010 they learned about goosebumps, sigils, and Maynooth

recently feeling constantly out of the loop in all of my friend groups like i only ever have half the information on anything. "is X doing Y these days?" "they're mostly doing Z ever since they took over A's job!" i did not know they took over A's job 👍 maybe it's cos i stopped checking facebook?

one of my favourite things was when i was on holiday in wales with friends and one of them asked another what the four branches of the mabinogi were. they went "why don't you ask néide?" and first friend replied "okay but. i only want to know a *little* bit about it" FAIR TBH

i don't even call my actual aunts and uncles "aunt" or "uncle" to their face lmao we're a first names only kind of family, and i do distinguish from more distant relations cos i barely know my parents' cousins, but... i am able to grasp the concept that other people do it differently! wild, that!

i like getting paid to play music but i don't like the part where random people climb onto the stage to sit next to me and talk to me all evening and then try to add me on social media. i am literally working. would you do this to a waiter

people on bluesky LOVE to reply to your posts with apparent non-sequiturs and you're left frowning at it trying to work out what they misinterpreted that led them to think that was a relevant anecdote to provide

messing around in the Scriptorium playtest instead of working on my Bisclavret chapter. surely this counts as scholarship somehow
a screenshot from the game Scriptorium showing a cropped view of a manuscript folio with a blue and white wavy border. There's a large red initial Q over a blue background, decorated with the same white wavy design as the border. it starts the text "Quant de lais faire m'entremet, ne voil ublier Bisclaveret." under the text is an illustration of a king in a blue tunic holding hands with a wolf in front of a curtain, flanked on either side by vines.

generally in most life situations i am not a huge fan of hierarchies but frankly i think the class i am currently in could do with a stronger teacher-student hierarchy so the other students stop completely derailing the class and i can actually learn what i'm here to learn

i feel like the difference between historians on the internet and history enthusiasts on the internet is the latter will present you with Facts They've Learned, As Facts, and the former will give you a lengthy explanation of what people for the last however many years have thought might be the case.

trans healthcare is often lifesaving for more reasons than suicidality. for example, my disordered eating basically disappeared overnight after i got top surgery, because it was dysphoria the whole time (lose weight = smaller boobs = pursue indefinitely until it becomes unsafe). this is important!

a mildly irritating internet phenomenon is people who have a fairly thorough understanding of particular aspects of history but seemingly no grasp of historiography or the process through which that history has reached current understandings

these days i've come to the conclusion that neither gender nor sex (insofar as they are understood to be separate at all) should be regulated by law and there is no actual reason for the government to be involved in either that doesn't represent some form of discrimination or inequality

yeah I guess what I’m saying it, I wouldn’t judge a person based on their art, but I’ll absolutely judge art based on who created it

how dead is twitter? well, these are the default options on tumblr's "share post" button that's right. bluesky and mastodon made it on there and twitter didn't
"share post" showing "copy link" and "embed" and icons for pinterest, reddit, bluesky, mastodon, threads, and facebook.

i think pride book lists might have a better chance of not just being the same authors over and over again if people making them set themselves a quota for white american trad-pub cis authors cos like. what about everyone else. the ones without the marketing budget

i was at a session recently where someone had put their car keys on the table (to get them out of their pocket/out of the way, i guess) and this accordion player joined us, looked at the keys, and went "wow, what kind of a session is this??" AND NOBODY ELSE GOT THE JOKE

every year as a child we used to go to spring harvest (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_...) and later i went on a lot of scripture union camps (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scriptu...). i also attended soul survivor when i was 15 (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_Su... ). these are my protestant credentials

sometimes i see people talking about what protestants do/believe and despite growing up in extremely protestant (inc. evangelical) environments i don't really recognise it at all and idk if they're misunderstanding/misrepresenting things or if american protestants are just really weird. maybe both

drives me nuts when people start talking about misogyny in history or whatever using debunked or inaccurate examples. there's plenty of actual misogyny out there, you don't have to go on about how that gender-neutral word was actually all about women and that's why it became derogatory

the thing about posting about morris dancing on tumblr is you immediately discover how many of your followers and mutuals in law are Morris dancers which is a hop skip and jump from discovering how many mutual friends you have with these complete strangers which is a great way to dox yourself

The fact that you're more likely to hear Kneecap on the news than on the pop radio stations underlines their significance. If I was a softbaby songwriter and I heard a radio exec say "Kneecap are huge but we can't play them, too controversial, play Darach’s single instead" I'd be radicalised.
