By challenging normative speech-related behaviour, Madonna arguably transcends the boundaries of age.
‘[e]xpected behaviours associated with ageing can no longer be taken for
granted’ (Biggs 2005: S118). These findings potentially present a
challenge to the premise of apparent-time studies, which assume that
individuals’ speech does not change after a certain point in their early
years (see Wagner 2012 for an overview). In other words, ageing does not lead to a loss of agency. By challenging normative speech-related
behaviour, Madonna arguably transcends the boundaries of age.

The Age Chameleon: Social and Biological Effects on Madonna’s Ageing Voice
100
Simon Christiansen @simonchris.bsky.social · 4h
Recent research from the University of Copenhagen shows that Madonna's voice is ageless. #Madonna
Abstract
This paper studies the dynamic interplay between social, chronological, and biological types of age, particularly how their complex imbrications differentially impinge upon the linguistic expectations of age and ageing women. In order to do so, we conduct a real-time quantitative analysis of interviews with the American singer and songwriter Madonna. Our acoustic analyses of Madonna’s fundamental frequency, F1 and F2 indicate that Madonna presents as difficult to classify in terms of her age profile. We suggest that both f0 and vowel quality variation are used to index age non-specificity, or agelessness. The analyses also provide a window into how the biological and social aspects of age and ageing are negotiated across a female’s life span.

This should be so obvious that it doesn’t need to be said, but given what kind of weekend it’s been on here, apparently it does: If you don’t want old rapists running the world, in office, in the board room, making decisions for all of us get comfortable with “ruining” young rapists’ lives

the defining games story of the last decade is when the dead cells team got a bunch of positive press for being a workers co-op but then the game was a huge hit and so they made a private company for all the new employees to scale up into while the “co-op” remained about ten people large lol

In his essay, which The Independent has seen, Falade writes that his first language – Yorùbá – is “a highly lyrical dialect rich in proverbs, aphorisms, metaphors, parallelism” – and “not X, but Y” constructions – many features of which, he notes, are now the hallmarks of AI-generated writing.
Falade explains that he “drew on Yorùbá oral storytelling traditions while writing Call Me, I’ll Hide the Body. As a Yorùbá writer telling a voice-driven thriller, it felt natural that the rhythms, sarcasm, humor, and narrative techniques of my culture would shape the novel’s voice.”
It was a voice that impressed publishers enough that 14 of them entered into an auction in the US alone to bid for the debut novel. In his essay, Falade offers an example of how the Yorùbá dialect works. “Even an insult should display imagination,” he writes. “A blunt ‘You jerk!’ or ‘Go to hell’ would disappoint your Yorùbá ancestors. They might turn in their graves if you wasted an insult by making it ordinary. We say things like: Ẹ rí bí orí ẹ ṣe rí pẹlẹbẹ bí ìdí ìgbákọ (‘See how flat your head is, like the bottom of a food scoop’). But place something along [those] lines … in a manuscript, and an editor trained to fear every unfamiliar metaphor may swear on their life that some hallucinating machine wrote it.”
He went through his manuscript after researching the writing features people associate with AI. “There were 18 ‘not X, but Y’ constructions and 46 em dashes,” he writes. “A career I spent years building was derailed because people unfamiliar with the Yorùbá rhetoric and oral storytelling traditions that shaped my narrative voice concluded, out of sheer cultural ignorance, that a chatbot must have written my work.”
It is ironic then that Falade tells me the reason his manuscript got so much attention was because of its unique voice. “They told me they handle thousands of manuscripts yearly and had not found one that sounded like mine.”
