By challenging normative speech-related behaviour, Madonna arguably transcends the boundaries of age.
‘[e]xpected behaviours associated with ageing can no longer be taken for
granted’ (Biggs 2005: S118). These findings potentially present a
challenge to the premise of apparent-time studies, which assume that
individuals’ speech does not change after a certain point in their early
years (see Wagner 2012 for an overview). In other words, ageing does not lead to a loss of agency. By challenging normative speech-related
behaviour, Madonna arguably transcends the boundaries of age.

Recent research from the University of Copenhagen shows that Madonna's voice is ageless. #Madonna
Abstract
This paper studies the dynamic interplay between social, chronological, and biological types of age, particularly how their complex imbrications differentially impinge upon the linguistic expectations of age and ageing women. In order to do so, we conduct a real-time quantitative analysis of interviews with the American singer and songwriter Madonna. Our acoustic analyses of Madonna’s fundamental frequency, F1 and F2 indicate that Madonna presents as difficult to classify in terms of her age profile. We suggest that both f0 and vowel quality variation are used to index age non-specificity, or agelessness. The analyses also provide a window into how the biological and social aspects of age and ageing are negotiated across a female’s life span.

In his essay, which The Independent has seen, Falade writes that his first language – Yorùbá – is “a highly lyrical dialect rich in proverbs, aphorisms, metaphors, parallelism” – and “not X, but Y” constructions – many features of which, he notes, are now the hallmarks of AI-generated writing.
Falade explains that he “drew on Yorùbá oral storytelling traditions while writing Call Me, I’ll Hide the Body. As a Yorùbá writer telling a voice-driven thriller, it felt natural that the rhythms, sarcasm, humor, and narrative techniques of my culture would shape the novel’s voice.”
It was a voice that impressed publishers enough that 14 of them entered into an auction in the US alone to bid for the debut novel. In his essay, Falade offers an example of how the Yorùbá dialect works. “Even an insult should display imagination,” he writes. “A blunt ‘You jerk!’ or ‘Go to hell’ would disappoint your Yorùbá ancestors. They might turn in their graves if you wasted an insult by making it ordinary. We say things like: Ẹ rí bí orí ẹ ṣe rí pẹlẹbẹ bí ìdí ìgbákọ (‘See how flat your head is, like the bottom of a food scoop’). But place something along [those] lines … in a manuscript, and an editor trained to fear every unfamiliar metaphor may swear on their life that some hallucinating machine wrote it.”
He went through his manuscript after researching the writing features people associate with AI. “There were 18 ‘not X, but Y’ constructions and 46 em dashes,” he writes. “A career I spent years building was derailed because people unfamiliar with the Yorùbá rhetoric and oral storytelling traditions that shaped my narrative voice concluded, out of sheer cultural ignorance, that a chatbot must have written my work.”
It is ironic then that Falade tells me the reason his manuscript got so much attention was because of its unique voice. “They told me they handle thousands of manuscripts yearly and had not found one that sounded like mine.”

Reminder that the first attempt to give Boba Fett a personality and backstory - Star Wars: Tales of the Bounty Hunters - made him a middle-aged straight edge nerd who lectures people on how spice is a gateway drug.
Fett reached up, as though to take off his helmet—saw them
watching him with plain anticipation. Another of the armor’s benefits;
taking the helmet off became an act of theater. He paused with his
hand on the base of his helmet, and relaxed. “I wanted to ask you a
question.” The hand dropped slightly. “Does your conscience ever
bother you?”
Voors stared at him. “Are you serious? Over spice?”
“Does it ever bother your conscience,” Fett said again, in the voice
that always sounded so harsh when he spoke Basic, “trafficking in
spice?”
Voors said a little hesitantly, “It’s not even addictive. And there are
valid medical uses for it—”
The bodyguard nearest Fett blinked, shook his head and blinked
again. “Substances that are not addictive,” said Fett, “frequently lead
to the misuse of substances that are. Doesn’t that bother you?”
Voors took a deep breath and exploded. “No, it doesn’t bother me!
My conscience is just—” His mouth shut … and then opened again, as
though he intended to continue speaking. She scrambled to her feet and backed up into a corner of the room,
breathing heavily. Fett imagined she had fought with the guards as
they brought her down to him. “You touch me—” Her voice failed
her, and she stood there, shivering, and finally said, “Touch me and
one of us is going to die.”
He lowered the rifle slowly, and looked around the room. He had
few enough possessions here with him in the palace; everything he
owned, which was little enough, was aboard the Slave I. Finally he
pointed at the thin sheet that covered the bed. “Cover yourself. I’m
not going to touch you.”
Organa moved slightly to the side, leaned over and grabbed the
sheet and wrapped it around herself and the brief costume Jabba had
allowed her, and backed up again into the corner of the room that left
her farthest away from Fett. “You’re not?”
Fett shook his head. He sat down in the corner facing hers, moving
carefully, and propped his rifle across his knees. He had to move
carefully; his knees had been getting worse in recent years. “Sex
between those not married,” said Fett, “is immoral.”
“Yeah,” said Organa. “So’s rape.”
Fett nodded. “So is rape.” He sat in what was, for him, a
comfortable silence, watching her. She settled down in the opposite
corner, being careful of her covering; Fett approved of her modesty,
but it did not prevent him from continuing to look at her. He had
never so much as held a woman in his arms, Boba Fett, and the desire
for a woman came to him less frequently, with the passage of the
years; but in Fett’s mind his chastity made him no less a man, and she
was worth looking at, still flushed from her struggles, with her dark
hair cascading down over the pale sheet. Now she did look at him. “You remind me of Han Solo, a little. He
didn’t believe—”
Fett heard his voice rise dangerously. “I am nothing like Solo and
don’t you compare me to him.”
Leia took a slow, deep breath. “Okay. Why does that offend you
so?”
Fett leaned forward again. “Do you know what that man has done
in his life? Never mind the loyal citizens of the Empire that he, and
you, have killed during your Rebellion; war is war and perhaps you,
at least, think you are fighting for Justice. But Solo? He’s a brave man,
yes; he’s also a mercenary who’s never done a decent thing in his life,
who’s never done a difficult thing that somebody wasn’t paying him
for. He’s smuggled banned substances—”
“He ran spice!”
Fett found himself on his feet and yelling. “Spice is illegal! It’s a
euphoric, it alters moods, and the use of it leads to the use of worse
substances, and a man who will run spice,” he snarled, “will run
anything!” He stood tense and motionless, holding his rifle in a
quivering grip, staring down at Leia. “And if I had been using spice
tonight, Leia Organa, perhaps you would not be safe with me in this
room.”Malloc stared at him. “That crap I drank on Tatooine? That wasn’t
Merenzane Gold, you idiot, they don’t serve Merenzane Gold in bars
like that, they just pour it out of bottles that once, eons ago, were
looked at hard by a man who heard of Merenzane! Don’t you know
anything about liquor?” he asked in despair. “Haven’t you a single
civilized vice?”
Fett shook his head. “No. I do not drink, nor indulge in other drugs.
They are an insult to the flesh.”
“So you Hunted me down because you thought I was drinking
Merenzane Gold, all those years on Tatooine. Fett, I had one glass of
real Gold the entire time I was on that miserable excuse for a world.”

His last substantial website news update was about how he's too incompetent to work a frozen yoghurt machine and had no choice but to go into webcomics.
February 23, 2009
All we hear is radio ga ga, radio goo goo
Posted by Tatsuya Ishida
My first summer job ever was working the concession stand at Universal Studios. I worked at the tram rest stop, where all the folks on the tour would take a break and eat sandwiches and frozen yogurt. And let me tell you, I hated those yogurt dispensing machines. For the life of me I could never get it to swirl right. I'd end up making a huge mess every time. Whenever a customer would order the frozen yogurt, I'd have to ask someone else to make it. It was pathetic. One time it was real busy, a mass of hungry patrons lining up for treats. When I got an order for frozen yogurt, I looked around but no one was available to pinch hit for me. Crestfallen, I trudged over to the yogurt machine, took a deep breath, and told myself that this was it. I must face my fears. I will master this yogurt contraption if it kills me. Yes. To the death! Thusly armed with a new sense of mission, I commenced with the swirlage. It just slopped all over the place. I grabbed another cup and tried again. Fail. I just made ugly piles of sludge. After three aborted attempts, a fellow employee finally intervened and produced a competent looking yogurt for me. God, what a humiliating ordeal. Not even capable of serving fast food. To add insult to injury, I would later get exiled to the churro cart. I can hear middle management's rationale for this: "The rookie is ill equipped to handle the high pressure situation of the yogurt machine. Relocate him to the churro stand. If the idiot can't manage the task of sprinkling cinnamon on donuts, send him into webcomics."

TheLaurenChen on Twitter: "Just saw The Odyssey.

Sadly, the woke casting is far from my biggest issue with the movie.

The film opens with Travis Scott, the rapper, as a bard.

Within the first minute, we also see Elliot Page as a Greek warrior. There's also an oriental and Indian warrior, too. And more black people.

So in the opening, there are more genders and races on screen than minutes in the movie."

Hannibal Lecter in the book has some weird ideas about trans people. What tree are you?
"Let's see... our hypothesis is we're looking for a male who will test differently
from the way a true transsexual would test. All right--- on House-Tree-Person, look for
someone who didn't draw the female figure first. Male transsexuals almost always draw
the female first and, typically, they pay a lot of attention to adornments on the females
they draw. Their male figures are simple stereotypes--- there are some notable exceptions
where they draw Mr. America--- but not much in between.
"Look for a house drawing without the rosy-future embellishments--- no baby
carriage outside, no curtains, no flowers in the yard.
"You get two kinds of trees with real transsexuals--- flowing, copious willows and
castration themes. The trees that are cut off by the edge of the drawing or the edge of the
paper, the castration images, are full of life in the drawings of true transsexuals.
Flowering and fruitful stumps. That's an important distinction. They're very unlike the
frightened, dead, mutilated trees you see in drawings by people with mental disturbances.
That's a good one--- Billy's tree will be frightful. Am I going too fast?"
"No, Dr. Lecter."
"On his drawing of himself; a transsexual will almost never draw himself naked.
Don't be misled by a certain amount of paranoid ideation in the TAT cards--- that's fairly
common among transsexual subjects who cross-dress a lot; oftentimes they've had bad
experiences with the authorities. Shall I summarize?"
"Yes, I'd like a summary."

TIL, there is a 19th century steampunk version of Frankenstein called Frank-in-Steam.
fifteen stage productions adapted Frankenstein. The title of one 1824 production—Frank-in-Steam; or, The Modern Promise to Pay—parodies the full title of Shelley’s novel; at the time, steam power was as potent an icon of modern industrial technology as were the automated looms that Luddites raged against from 1811 to 1817, their campaigns peaking from the summer of 1816 to that of 1817, precisely when Shelley was writing her novel (O’Flinn 1986, 196). In Frank-in-Steam, the play’s protagonist, a student in debt, learns of the death of his antagonist, a bailiff named Mr. Snatch, and cannot resist the opportunity to reanimate the corpse—rather unwisely, since the bailiff remains, in his undead state, as bent on collecting the student’s debt as he was in life. Ultimately, the student kills his monstrous progeny by pushing Snatch into a steamboat’s boiler (Forry 1990, 186). This play also parodies Peake’s Presumption, not only by capitalizing on the growing popularity of stagings of Frankenstein but also in one important detail—by not staging but instead narrating its climactic steam-boiler murder scene, thereby denying the audience a technical spectacle that Presumption had led it to expect of these stagings.

TIL, polo players clone their horses, so they can ride the same horse over and over. Cloning is banned in horseracing but not in polo, for some reason.
Last Saturday, at a prestigious match in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo, polo player Adolfo Cambiaso rode six different horses to help his team win. That in itself is not remarkable: Cambiaso is widely considered the world's best polo player. What is noteworthy is that all six horses were clones of the same mare—they're named Cuartetera 01 through 06—and that Cambiaso did it at such a high-profile event.

"It's most important that he won at Palermo," says Santiago Ballester, a member of the Argentine Association of Polo in Buenos Aires. "It's the tournament."

Riders frequently change mounts during a polo match, an intense game that's dubbed "hockey on horseback" and has teams of four competing against each other for goals. Cambiaso leads the team La Dolfina, and was the first high-level player to embrace cloned horses. Polo, unlike horseracing, allows cloned animals, and they have become increasingly popular since 2013 when Cambiaso first helped his team win a match riding a clone.

The movies don't quite catch just how misogynistic Bond really is. It's way worse when you can hear his inner dialogue. From "Casino Royale".
Bond sat at the window and gathered his thoughts. Nothing that Mathis had told him was reassuring. He was completely blown and under really professional surveillance. An attempt might be made to put him away before he had a chance to pit himself against Le Chiffre at the tables. The Russians had no stupid prejudices about murder. And then there was this pest of a girl. He sighed. Women were for recreation. On a job, they got in the way and fogged things up with sex and hurt feelings and all the emotional baggage they carried around. One had to look out for them and take care of them.

‘Bitch,’ said Bond, and then remembering the Muntzes, he said ‘bitch’ again more loudly and walked out of the room.
