Chūya Nakahara / 中原中也 Japanese poet (1907-1937)
Framed in an intimate, monochrome studio portrait, the young poet Chūya Nakahara gazes directly toward the viewer with an intense yet hauntingly melancholic expression. Shadows envelop the lower field and background, seamlessly merging his dark coat and wide-brimmed felt fedora into a deep, light-absorbing void. Soft directional studio lighting grazes the pale contours of his face, highlighting the youthful smoothness of his skin against the rich darkness of his hair and hat. His unblinking eyes and set, unsmiling lips convey a quiet, suspended vulnerability, creating a tactile sensory contrast between the velvet darkness of the shadows and the luminous clarity of his countenance.
Captured during the early Shōwa era, this photograph documents Chūya Nakahara (1907–1937), one of modern Japan's most celebrated avant-garde and lyric poets. Deeply influenced by French Symbolists such as Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine—whose poetry he translated into Japanese—Nakahara synthesized Dadaist experimentation with traditional Japanese lyrical sensibilities to produce verse of extraordinary musicality and emotional depth. His seminal 1934 collection, Yagi no Uta ("Goat Songs"), captured the bohemian grief, alienation, and existential longing of interwar Tokyo. Nakahara’s meticulous approach to literary monozukuri (artisanal mastery in poetic craft and translation) revolutionized modern Japanese free-verse poetry before his life was tragically cut short by illness at the age of thirty.

Fûten, the Wind Deity 十二天像 風天図 Hanabusa Itchô late 17th–early 18th century MEDIUM/TECHNIQUEHanging scroll; ink, color, and gold on paper DIMENSIONS90.2 x 37.4 cm (35 ½ x 14 ¾ in.) (height x width) CREDIT LINEWilliam Sturgis Bigelow Collection
Standing resolute upon a floating oval cloud pedestal, Fûten—the Esoteric Buddhist deity of the wind—confronts an unseen gale, his white hair and beard blowing wildly across his stern, weathered face. He firmly grasps a long wooden staff crowned with a luminous sacred jewel (hōju), from which a bifurcated white banner whipped by wind spirals into the upper air. He is clad in intricate armor beneath richly patterned robes of vermilion, gold, and deep indigo, swathed in fluid celestial scarves (tenne) that loop and undulate around his frame like swirling air currents. Set against an unadorned, pale silk ground, the high-contrast mineral pigments and calligraphic line-work translate the raw, invisible kinetic energy of a tempest into a vivid visual experience, echoing the rustle of silk and the howling of mountain winds.
Executed in the late 17th or early 18th century by the celebrated Edo-period master Hanabusa Itchō (1652–1724), this hanging scroll depicts Fûten (Vāyu), the guardian of the northwest among the Jūnitai (Twelve Devas) of Esoteric Buddhism. Trained in the Kanō school before developing his own lively, genre-infused style, Itchō brought a fresh, human vitality and fluid movement to traditional Buddhist iconography. Fûten's role as the controller of winds and purifier of atmospheric defilement reflects the syncretic spiritual landscape of Edo Japan.

My linocut on white Japanese paper shows 18th century woman (Laura Bassi) in dress with fur cape, and hair in ringlets with a hairpiece which echoes a laurel crown. She’s holding an open book with Newtonian optics diagrams and in front of her is an electrical machine (a stand with vertical large glass plate and hand crank and brass tubes to channel the large electrostatic charges it could generate through friction). She is surrounded by typical high tech lab equipment of her day like conductors, an aurora flask, a luminous discharge tube, a Lane electrometer, Leyden jars and Volta's electric pistol. It’s printed in a gradient of a hint of turquoise through violet to red-magenta to bronze from the bottom to the top.
