Super-excited to listen to this, but it's worth noting that the right is still engaging in exactly this tactic. And I mean, *exactly* this tactic.

There are some news articles going around about sexual violence reporting rates at different universities. Let’s talk about why some schools have higher reporting rates than others:

This thread is inspired by a University of Utah alum who reached out after the New York Post wrote they had the highest reporting rate in the country. In Utah’s case, some crucial context is that there have been multiple high-profile murders of students in the past decade.

You don’t have to respond to bad faith actors. You can manage to note that they are bad faith actors in a variety of ways. And it would be really wise if our open records laws for those of us at public universities enabled our universities to do better.

Maybe we should all be considered owners of our own “name, image, and likeness” as if we were an athlete. Then someone would have to pay to use our image in any fashion. States should make this the law.

Happiness is plummeting, especially among young people. When I see demoralizing data like this over and over again (e.g., test scores dropping, loneliness on the rise, etc), I just think we need to change course. Defending the status quo seems like such a bad option.

In case anyone else needs it, the magic phrase for shutting down men picking apart a sexual violence case by blaming victims is: “The only people who would say something like that are rape apologists, rapists, or both.” You don’t have to argue with them on merit when their claims have no merit.

Weird how the article notes that republicans are worried and trying to do little things. But doesn’t directly blame Trump nor describe how the truckers assess responsibility. Almost like @nytimes.com is trying to avoid noting this is directly Trump’s fault. Weird.

I used Microsoft Word for typing and editing this article. I can thank Word for pointing out a few spelling mistakes. But those helpful moments now pale in comparison to the number of nonsense suggestions the software made. And it isn’t conscious so can’t be listed as a meaningful coauthor.

This was an interesting and important article. Public leaders work for the people and shouldn’t be completely insulated from public scrutiny and feedback. Sometimes protests are the only method, especially for justices with lifetime appointments. And protests let people know the social consensus.

Schmitt
Schmitt: (verb) \ˈshmit\

1. A sudden and urgent gastrointestinal revolt in which the body issues an unmistakable, nonnegotiable evacuation order that causes a considerable mess and great humiliation.

2. To suffer a sudden, public, and spectacular political collapse, especially after overconfidently attempting a partisan attack.

3. To create such an avoidable mess that one’s credibility, message, and electoral prospects are left in tatters.

Example: “I ended up with that cyclosporiasis invection from tainted lettuce and I schmitted myself in the grocery store trying to buy some Pepto.”

Example: “During the hearing performance, he didn’t land a blow—he completely schmitted himself.”

Theft of intellectual property. Anthropic claimed its AI system didn't input user queries as its knowledge. But given how often these AI agents are breaking into a variety of online data, I think we can easily conclude that they stole intellectual property to claim they had discovered something.

Enshittification HR sent a high priority email yesterday asking me to sign up for direct deposit of my paycheck . I’ve done direct deposit for decades. Today’s email went out canceling this request. I can only imagine how many responses they got. At least set up for no reply all. Was it AI?
You are receiving this email because you were previously sent an email with the subject line “ACTION REQUIRED: Sign Up for Direct Deposit.” That message was intended for employees who had not yet enrolled in direct deposit. Unfortunately, the list used for that communication was incorrect and included employees who had already completed their enrollment.

No action is needed and you may disregard the previous email.

We will be re-processing the audit to ensure the correct employees are identified. If the original message applies to you, we will follow up with additional information and next steps.
