Discussing gender, power, and empowerment in my psychology of gender class this week. I ask all the women what they do and buy to feel empowered. I ask men the same and they are confused. I ask whether we are sold individual empowerment to divide us and move our energies away from collective action.

I am not accepting a PhD student this cycle, as Villanova does not have a PhD program! We do, however, have a fabulous MS program in psychology (with funding!!), which I both went through as a student and work with students in :)

Watching material spark students' interest and then fanning the flames of their growing passions is simply the most fulfilling part of my job. I love seeing students' excitement and putting them in positions where they can thrive. A few examples of how I am trying to do this right now:

I am so glad that I worked out of academia for a few years so I can afford the weird professor wardrobe of my dreams (and also afford my rent).

PSYCH FOLKS! Do you have a graduate student/post-bacc/outstanding undergraduate **who does work related to women’s lives/health/brains** might be interested in presenting (virtually or in person) to a group of undergraduate women at Villanova? Let me know :)

If you use AI to do your research, you really cannot complain when reviewers use AI to review your papers, imo. The processes you use to expedite your workflow create more work for the rest of us, who are under the same constraints to maximize our own output. Plus, peer review is invisible labor.

Request! I am the advisor for a group at VU for women interested in psych. We are hosting a virtual event in October and are looking for speakers who could give a 15-20 minute talk on a panel about the psychology of crime. We are especially interested in work that involves women victims/offenders.

I don’t take offense when students ask if material is going to be on the exam. I am flattered that they think that I have written their exam weeks in advance of the exam date, however.

I was talking to a student about 9/11 today and mentioned that many of my friends lost their parents that day (I grew up in Northern NJ). She was amazed that I had any memories of or connection to 9/11. This was surprising to me until I realized that she was born 7 years after this event.

People judge a sexist perpetrator as less sexist if he is rude toward men. This occurs because rudeness toward men creates the illusion of gender blindness. Men who hold sexist beliefs about women often are rude to men which gives sexists plausible deniability. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Question! When you were in college, did you ever hear about “duck syndrome” or the analogy about students being like ducks in that they look graceful on the water but are furiously kicking their feet under the surface? Please answer: 1. Yes/no 2. Which school you attended 3. Year you started

Folks with active research labs, how are you determining whether undergraduate students can join your lab? My general philosophy has always been “the more, the merrier,” but I am wondering if others have screening systems in place.

I am trying something new this semester in my Psych of Gender class. Specifically 10% of students’ final grade come from a “choose your own adventure” assignment. Students can select from books, documentaries, podcasts, and events on campus to attend and write about or discuss with me/the class. 1/2

1/43 Ok folks, after much teasing and anticipation, I'm THRILLED to share our new paper in Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. Not gonna lie: I'm proud of this one, and I hope it makes an impact on the field (so please share!). A thread 🧵👇
To Be a Mental Disorder: Revisiting Behavioral Addictions
Joshua B. Grubbs, * Nicholas C. Borgogna, Beáta Bőthe, Hyoun S. Kim, Rory A. Pfund, Shane W. Kraus

Manuscript to appear in the 2027 edition of Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, this preprint may not
exactly represent the final printed copy.

Grubbs, J.B., Borgogna, N.C., Bőthe, Beáta, Kim, H.S., Pfund, R.A., & Kraus, S.W. (2027) To Be a Mental Disorder: Revisiting Behavioral Addictions. Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. 10.1146/annurev-clinpsy-061225-045608

Behavioral addictions have been recognized in various forms for centuries, yet only three—Gambling Disorder, Gaming Disorder, and Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder—are currently included in formal diagnostic systems. In the past decade, research on these conditions has expanded dramatically in both volume and methodological rigor, drawing on longitudinal, neurobiological, and cross-cultural designs and evolving into a truly global science. Even so, the field remains beset by unresolved controversies. Chief among these is a persistent tendency to import substance use disorder concepts—tolerance, withdrawal, and dependence—that lack conceptual and empirical support when applied to behavior. Related challenges concern the over-pathologizing of normal engagement and a reliance on confirmatory, self-report measurement of uncertain validity. We argue that advancing the field requires sustained funding, theory grounded in the disorders themselves, objective and intensive-longitudinal methods, greater diversity, and public health and regulatory attention to increasingly technological environments.

The best piece of advice I can give to incoming college students is that the freshman 15 doesn’t matter. Go out with your friends and have fun. Get late night ice cream with your roommate & let your parents spoil you when you go home. Going up a size won’t kill you, but an eating disorder might.

If anyone is wondering, I don't use generative AI. It offers me nothing useful creatively and nothing trustworthy as research. The environmental impact is appalling and the companies who developed it stole copyright intellectual property knowing that is illegal. GenAI is dishonest at every level.
