Just realized my wildlife cameras at the house will do just fine with no internet; I just have to pull the card and download the data each time I go to the house. We will still have (delayed) wildlife updates !

We are doing a little house renovation/post-Eaton fire cleanup and have moved out for the next ~8 months. Which means I won't even know if Patch is around or not or if the new mama bear and cub come visit or if the bobcat family sticks around. It's a little sad. Maybe I'll post old pictures.

I think they don’t even know that Patch is the Offical Pool Bear of Bluesky (Also, Patch is awol and plausibly near the end of his expected lifespan and it makes me very very sad) Bears in Los Angeles Are Getting Their Close-Ups, Ready or Not

California has 60,000 black bears, and they are venturing far from their usual habitat in search of food and shelter. It’s the humans who have to adapt.

In Entebbe and headed home from Uganda today and thought I had posted my last wildlife picture, but no. My backyard camera caught a brand new mamma bear and cub. We have definitely not seen them before! I hope they decide they like the neighborhood and consider taking a swim.
The same yard that I always post, sometimes with Patch, sometimes with bobcats, but this time there is a medium sized black bear (who is an adorable brown blond color) with her cub. I wish I knew how to estimate cub ages.

The lions-don’t-sleep-tonight update. After hearing lions all night long we had to leave at 5am. I sat on the porch for 15 minutes before and heard nothing. When our escort arrived I told him I thought the lions had left. Oh no they are right there, pointing his flashlight 200 yards away to 8 lions.

Drama in camp tonight. We are in a “tent” camp (aka cabins with canvas walls) and are not allowed to go from the main dining tent to our tent without a (spear) armed escort. Which seems a little over kill, right? Here is a “tent” with our daughter on the patio

I don’t remember the movies well but somehow this makes me think of some scene from Planet of the Apes and I fear it will not end well for us humans. Also this was the largest baboon troop I’ve ever seen. Slightly intimidating.

I have not yet been eaten by the leopard who hangs around our camp at night but I might end up getting eaten by lions because I really think they need belly rubs
A small group of lions lazily lying on the ground in the Savanah all but begging to have their bellies rubbed. Luckily I know that belly rubs can be a trap so I will just be scritching ears

You must bring me… a shrubbery! (With a baby bobcat inside)
A baby bobcat sits watch on top of a potted shrubbery that my wife has left outside all summer in hopes that it will magically plant itself. It has not planted itself, but the bobcat does not mind as it provides a better perch from which to stalk butterflies, which has been his main activity today that I have watched.

It’s Monday and all accounts are locked down and the scam/theft appears broken up. This morning the MIL mentioned an account she had neglected to tell us about and, yup, they had tried to break in but the bank appears to have shut it down. Seriously. Talk to the people in your life about this stuff.

I found an old camera SD full of pictures. They were mostly this mom and her cubs hanging out in our back yard. She just wanted a nap. They just wanted to play.
Black bears (who are brown): Mom naps in a green yard while two cubs box over the top of her body. The cubs wrestling, one with very sharp murder claws prominently visible. One cub resting his entire lower body (how does it even fit?) into a large bowl that used to be full of water but is now full of bear.

A sign at a Mobil station where all of the gas is apparently free. This, I believe, is below market rate, but I haven’t bought gas this year so I don’t really know for sure. Maybe I am wrong though and this is what Trump meant when he said that gas was cheap. What do I know?

Speaking of pool bears we had a 2nd nighttime (real) bear visit this week. Again too dark to see; super skittish when it heard us inside. Not typical Patch behaviour. Patch is utterly unconcerned with people. Might be a younger new resident. He tried the trash, but, sorry, it was locked. Stay tuned.
